[MARILYN MONROE SON RUMOR DEBUNKED; NATIONAL ENQUIRER HOLLYWOOD REPORTER ORIGINAL RESEARCH] MARILYN MONROE SON RUMORS research file of assorted items of the investigation by Hal Jacques, a leading Hollywood/celebrity reporter active from the 1960s to '80s, working on assignment for the National Enquirer, 1970s, group of items made up of (a) memo TO: Brian Welles, FR: Hal Jacques, RE: Marilyn Monroe's Son, dated August 10th, 1972, 1-page original ribbon typed manuscript, in part, "It was about two years ago that [National] ENQUIRER asked that I check out this story and either prove or disprove it…[MM] had a fertility problem…Also, her work schedule…made [pregnancy] improbable otherwise…I spoke with a friend of the late Johnny Hyde [d. 1950, MM's agent who had an affair with her]…The boy who makes the pilgrimage to her crypt is a young actor [not her son]", typescript light but fully legible; (b) memo FR: Hal Jacques, TO: Bill Dick [National Enquirer editor], SUBJECT: "Marilyn Monroe's Illegitimate Son — Fact or Fiction?", Date: December 16, 1968, handwritten in upper right corner "Franz De Beil" [or deBiel], with phone number, 5-page single-space carbon copy typescript report by Hal Jacques with sections in the format "The Fiction:" followed by "The Fact:" in most cases more than one record of relevant facts, on the last page (page 50, the last part "The Fact;" original ribbon added by Hal Jacques, in part "As per our recent telephone conversation please find herewith the results of my research into the article by Franze de Beil [name underlined] concerning the purported illegitimate child…", minimal wear, fully legible; (c) two newspaper clippings mentioning MM's illegitimate son; (d) 3-1/2"-page italics typescript article with "Obligatory Mention - Franz de Beil, Photos and article by Franz de Beil" at the end, in part, "The impossibility for her to have a child was only a legend amidst others!!!…Johnny Mortenson, alias Kuhn…", continues to relate how the supposed child of MM got his name, his adoption, Johnny Hyde, MM's agent at William Morris Agency, tying everything together, undated/ca. 1960s, looks like word-processing of the period, minimal wear, fully legible; (e) "Marilyn Monroe" heading, 4-page research pages with names, questions, and topics variously in original ribbon typescript or handwritten in ink by Hal Jacques, among the mixed material is "Her psychologist - Dr. Greenson…Her agent when she died?…Check UCLA for such a student…Check with Screen Actors Guild for dates when pix were in production [followed by MM films 1949-51, the time when she was rumored to have given birth to an illegitimate son]…Name of adoptive parents?…Who told author [Franz de Beil] about MM's last phone call to boy and what she said?…John Hyde Vice President William Morris Agency…", on the backs of pages 2 and 4 are additional handwritten notes including contacts with phone numbers and collected information; (f) 2-1/4 page original ribbon typescript article with Hal Jacques handwritten editing "Marilyn Monroe's Illegitimate Son" [by Hal Jacques], an article/report on Hal Jacques' research and conclusion, in part, "Now the story [of MM's illegitimate son] is completely untrue and I say this on the basis of heavy research and every fact and angle as reported by the writer [Franz de Beil] who first put the story on paper…", continues to explain that the young man who periodically put flowers MM's grave was an actor she had befriended, her relationship with Johnny Hyde was not how it was portrayed to be, and MM's gynecologist said she had a fertility problem preventing her from carrying a fetus to birth…; NOTES: HAL JACQUES: 1916-2007, a leading Hollywood/celebrity reporter active from the 1950s to the '80s; FRANZ DE BEIL (or deBeil): little information found online, but notably a photograph of Charlie Chaplin and his wife Oona attributed to "Franz Debeil" indicating he was active in media coverage of celebrities; PROVENANCE: papers are from an archive of Hal Jacques office and career memorabilia acquired at an estate sale in Fairfield County, CT /// CONDITION: well preserved, minimal wear from light handling. keywords: original manuscript, celebrity memorabilia, Hollywood star, film studies, celebrity journalism, investigative journalism, media studies
