John Cochrane, traveler, was a nephew of Sir Alexander Cochrane [q. v.] and grandson of the eighth Earl of Dundonald. Having entered the royal navy when ten years old, he served, chiefly in West and East Indian waters, until the peace of 1814. He then made a tour on foot through France, Spain, and Portugal. Returning to England in 1820 he offered his services to the admiralty for the exploration of the Niger, but receiving an unfavorable answer, left England with the intention of making the tour of the world by way of Russia, Siberia, and North America. He travelled by Dieppe, Paris, and Berlin to St. Petersburg, most of the way on foot for the sake of economy. His subsequent progress was facilitated by the Russian government, who supplied him with the means to hire horses, sledges, and canoes. He reached Okhotsk in June 1821, having… Read More

Ellis Ashmead Bartlett (1881 - 1931) War correspondent. "I joined the Third Army at the commencement of August 1904, just before the first assault, remained attached to General Nogis headquarters until January 17, 1905, and entered the fortress with the victorious Japanese - one of my chief objects to place on record the obsolete method of fighting which characterised the siege - how men meet in masses to settle the disputes of their governments with bayonet, clubbed rifle and hand-grenade".
August 4, 1904 - January 2, 1905, the siege of Port Arthur on the Liaodong Peninsular of Manchuria was the longest battle of the Russo-Japanese War.

Description:
Good. This volume was printed on poor quality paper and rarely survives. Splitting to edge of fragile paper spine. Usual browning/foxing. 46 p. Text in Russian. With author's portrait. This is the second published appearance (and first in book form) of Solzhenitsyn's hugely controversial first book, originally published in the magazine Novy Mir two months earlier. By this time, Solzhenitsyn's ability to publish in his homeland was in jeopardy. Though a number of minor pieces would appear in periodicals, this was the first and last major publication of his work during the Soviet regime.

Description:
Brikner Alexander Gustavovich (1834-1896) - Russian historian of German origin. Brikner's study "The History of Peter the Great" became the first popular science essay in Russian historiography about the era and personality of Peter I, based on the latest research in historical thought. The History of Peter the Great is divided into six books. Each part covers a separate topic: the personality of the reforming tsar and his associates, the first years of independent rule, administrative and legislative reforms, and the foreign policy of Peter I.The main scientific interest of Alexander Brikner was the turn of Russia in its development towards Europe - therefore, the era of Peter the Great was of paramount interest to him.The value of the publication also lies in the rich illustrative material related to the Petrine era. The reproduction of drawings, engravings and documents was specially undertaken for this edition, with strict adherence to all the details of the originals, which was necessary to… Read More
