Description:
1677 Malebranche Philosophy Search of Truth John Locke Influence Metaphysics 3v

"Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive."
– Nicolas Malebranche
A rare edition of Malebranche's principal and most important work – "Concerning the Search after Truth". This book would lay the foundation for all of Malebranche's philosophical ideas and reputation. He primarily focused on human error and the existence of God within human nature. This edition also includes his "Laws of Communication" and his responses to Regis. This work was written with the sole purpose of generalizing, clarifying, and commenting on God's miracles and actions toward man.

The book was eventually placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1690 after disputes over its contents couldn't be settled. John Locke is known to have described Malebranche as "an acute and ingenious author" but obviously, not everyone saw his work in such light.

Description:
1662 Stillingfleet Irenicum Anglican Church Government vs Presbyterian ENGLISH

Edward Stillingfleet was a 17th-century British theologian known for his defensive views on Anglicanism. His first work, which (negatively) set the tone for his literary career, was 'The Irenicum', a work which advocated for compromise between the Presbyterian and Anglican Orthodox churches. While the root of the work is founded in theological church models and structures, Stillingfleet covers a variety of philosophical ideas including the state of natural law.

According to Morison and Richardson,
"'The Irenicum' was set forth the assuage the spirit of sectarian bitterness; it was an attempt to show that there was no plan of Church Order laid down in the New Testament; and it bears just as strongly against notions of divine institution of Presbyterianism."

'Irenicum' was published before the church was re-established and contributed to debates about ecclesiastical restoration by showing the legitimacy of obeying… Read More

1620 SATIRES Menippean Catholic LEAGUE Spain France Religion War Lipsius Rigault

'Quatuor clariss. virorum satyrae' is a rather unknown and obscure book of satires by Justus Lipsius and Nicolas Rigault, and while both names are given on the title page, neither is particularly known for political satire. This work is ultimately based on the 'Satire Menippee' – a political work of prose and satire which criticized the Catholic League and Spain during the French Religious Wars.

Description:
1690 History of Theodosius I Roman Empire Pagan v Christianity ROME Olympics 2v
Esprit Fléchier was a 17th-century French author who composed two important historical works – the histories of Cardinal Ximenes and Emperor Theodosius I – which are known to be highly accurate and insightful. While known primarily for his written sermons, spiritual memoires, and religious writings, these historical works have been Flechier's most desirable works.
This book, 'Histoire de Theodose le Grand', covers the life and political reign of Roman Emperor Theodosius I. Theodosius was the last emperor to rule the entire the Roman Empire and played a critical role in the establishment of Christianity in the Empire and banned pagan rituals which were common in both Roman and Greek cultures. Theodosius is also remembered for prohibiting the holding of Olympic Games following the games of 393 AD (for the association with pagan rituals).
This 17th-century edition is more complete and extensive than the first edition,… Read More

Description:
1718 Tertullian Apologetics Early Church Father Pagan Gnosticism Heresy Havercamp

"Truth persuades by teaching, but does not teach by persuading."
― Tertullian

Tertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine, especially those that spoke out against heresy. He is perhaps most famous for being the first Latin writer to use the term 'trinity' in reference to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Tertullian emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines.

These defenses, along with other Tertullian works, are collected in this 1718 French edition, collected and edited by Sigebert Havercamp. This edition is notable for including numerous copper engravings including a portrait of Tertullian, as well… Read More

Description:
1609 HUGE FOLIO Church History Baronio Catholic Cardinal Annals Popes Fathers

"The greatest history of the Church ever written!" (Lord Acton, on 'Annales')

Cesare Baronio of Sora was a 16th-century Italian cardinal and historian of the Catholic Church. Baronio had extensive conversations with Galileo on the heavens and was quoted as saying that "the Bible teaches us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go" in direct opposition to the famed astronomer.

Baronio wrote numerous theological works, but none more important than 'Ecclesiastical Annales'. In this work, Baronio provides a history of the first 12 centuries of the church with a heavy influence from the papacy. Even still, with direction from the Vatican, Baronio's 'Annales' is considered to be the "greatest history of the Church every written!"

1715 Blaise PASCAL Pensees Christian Apologetic Pascal's Wager French Philosophy
"Men despise religion. They hate it and are afraid it may be true. The cure for this is first to show that religion is not contrary to reason, but worthy of reverence and respect. Next make it attractive, make good men wish it were true, and then show that it is."
– Pascal, Pensees
Blaise Pascal's thoughts, organized as "Pensees," were written as a collection of writings on theology and philosophy. 'Pensees' was a culmination of all of Pascal's non-mathematic discoveries and ideas which ultimately led him to a life of religious asceticism. He defended Christianity in this work. In doing so, it 'became one of the most famous Christian books in history.' (Keller, Gospel Coalition). 'Pascal was aware that, very often, we see only what we want to see' (Morris, 145) and because of that, he hoped to be able to 'convince man to overcome the natural reluctance many feel toward religion.' The concept of "Pascal's Wager" stems… Read More

Description:
1787 MASONIC Origins of Adonhiramite Freemasonry Rituals Guillemain Maçonnerie
Books on freemasonry, published in the 18th-century are notoriously rare and difficult to obtain. This book is a rare and important collection of Adonhiramite masonry catechisms, writings, and doctrine by Louis Guillemain de Saint-Victor. It discusses freemason lodges, songs, and reflections within an assortment of small works dedicated to Freemasonry in France during the 18th-century. This book also dictates the origins of that branch of freemasonry.
Adonhiramite Freemasonry is loosely based on and taken from Jewish Scriptures and traditions which shed light on masonic legends. It is largely attributed to Saint-Victor because of this work and is named after Adonhiram, who first appears in the Book of Samuel in the Old Testament. Adonhiramite Freemasonry is often considered the 'orthodox faith' of Freemasonry. Adonhiramite Freemasons are essentially disciples of Hiram Abif, the architect of the Temple of Adonhiram and are… Read More
