Description:
1657 Lucius Florus History of Ancient Rome + Ampelius Liber Memorialis Salmasius

"Men of outstanding ability are more likely to lack the power of controlling their own people than of defeating an enemy in battle."
― Livy, The History of Rome

Florus was a Roman historian who lived during the 2nd-century AD. His history of Rome was collected by Livy, and mainly focuses on the foundation of Rome though the end of the B.C. era. The work is considered inaccurate, especially compared to Livy's much more popular and famous History of Rome.

This 1657 Elzevier edition of Florus was edited by the 17th-century French classist Claudius Salmasius. First appearing in 1638, this book not only includes Florus but also an edition of Lucius Ampelius's 'Liber Memorialis'. This work is an ancient index of 1st-century Roman history focusing on cosmography, mythology, and geography during the Republican period of Rome. Curiously, this is only the second known edition of Ampelius.

1593 Flaccus Latin Dictionary Festus Palazzo Farnese ROME Mythology gods RARE

Verrius Flaccus was a 1st century Roman grammarian who published the very first alphabetical Latin dictionary. This work was notable for becoming the basis for Sextus Pompeius Festus's 'Lexicon', a work that was edited and compiled sometime during the 2nd century. This work is a collection of Latin words in which Flaccus and Festus provide the etymology of words, definitions, use in language, and references in Roman mythology.

This late 16th-century edition was edited by French scholar Joseph Scaliger. Scaliger includes commentary on notes on various lesser Roman gods as well as commentary on the orations of Cicero.

― Aesop, Aesop's Fables

Aesop's fables have been printed for centuries and include some of the most famous fables and tales of all time. Originating sometime in the 6th- to 7th-century BC, these tales have appeared in popular culture for well over 2000 years in the form of books, plays, songs, and visual media.

This incredible early 17th-century printing of Aesop's fables features several additional works including:
· A 'life of Aesop' by 13th-century Byzantine monk Maximus Planudes

Description:
1649 Palaephatus On Incredible Things Greek Mythology Miracles Dragons Elzevier
'On Incredible Things' is a collection of ancient Greek myths written by Palaephatus. While no record of an author named Palaephatus ever lived, scholars are unable to properly identify the true author of these myths. Each of the sections of this work describe an amazing feat of Greek mythology followed by a statement of believability or authenticity. The work is filled with accounts of miracles, monsters and dragons, and mythical creatures, and much more. Interestingly, there is little mention of Greek gods making them more human than god-like.
This 1649 edition of Palaephatus was published by the famed Dutch publishing company Elzevier. Edited and translated into Latin by Cornelius Tollius.

Description:
1589 1ed SCORPIONS Conrad Gessner Schlangenbuch Dragons Monsters Reptiles

Scorpions… Monsters!... DRAGONS!!
Conrad Gessner was an iconic 16th-century scholar who is best remembered for his early treatises on animal science. While other 16th-century works of natural science existed in this era, few were written to expose the reality and existence of dragons! Gessner's "Schlangenbuch" is one of the earliest and certainly the best works describing reptiles as a whole. The term 'dragon' was used to describe any sort of snake, scorpion, or slithering reptile.
First published in 1587, 'Schlangenbuch' was a comprehensive guide to dragons and the myths and folktales that were associated with such reptiles. This section of the work is focused primarily on the scorpion, complete with one of the earliest printed woodcuts of the scorpion!

1629 Satires of HORACE Latin Rome Superstition Witchcraft Mythology Elzevier

"We are but dust and shadow."
― Horace

Horace was the most important Roman poet during the 1st-century BC. He composed satires, odes, epistles, and other poetic verses; works that have been referenced and studied for centuries. Horace's works have yielded some famous quotes that have influenced cultures and societies including "Carpe Diem!" (seize the day) and "Pactum serva" (keep the faith).
Horace's "Satires" were some of his most important works – a vast collection of poems on human emotion and flaws, witchcraft and superstition, mythology, Roman politics, adultery and sexuality, and much more.
This 17th-century edition of Horace's "Satires" was collected and edited by Daniel Heinsius, published by Elzevier.

1875 History Caricature & Grotesque ART Mythology Reynard Fox DRAGONS Witchcraft
Thomas Wright was a 19th-century English historian known for his works in archaeology, history of Britain, and commentary on English literature. One of his lesser-known works was 'A History of Caricature and Grotesque in Literature and Art'. In this book, Wright uncovers and discusses aspects of various forms of art in literature and tradition including caricature art in ancient civilizations.
While the contents of this book are truly extensive, some of the most interesting include the medieval depictions of dragons, Reynard the Fox, witchcraft, Erasmus's Praise of Folly, the famed Dance of Death, and much, much more.

Description:
1911 1ed Richard Wagner Ring Niblung Siegfried Rackham Illustrated Mythology ART

"Joy is not in things; it is in us"
― Richard Wagner

Richard Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (or "The Ring of the Niblung, WWV 86) was a landmark work in the history of music. It was a collection of four large-scale operas that created a 'cycle' of works which would in-turn be called the "Ring Cycle". The story loosely follows characters of Norse mythology and was a major influence in J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

This fine printing was illustrated by the famous Arthur Rackham. This volume contains the final two movements of the work – "Siegfried" and "The Twilight of the Gods" translated by Margaret Armour. The color illustrations are classic Rackham style and feature trolls, beasts, magic spells, and more in a very dark and sinister fantasy style. In fact, these illustrations are often collected, printed, and sold as a collection of prints without the text!
