1847 1ed Kutbeddin Izniki 14th-c Ottoman Mysticism Islam Shari'a Sufism Arabic
Kutbeddin İznikî was a late 14th-century Ottoman mystic known for his studies in mysticism, Sufism, Shari'a sciences, and even cult leadership. His writings focused on prayer as a form of worship, fasting, fiqh study, Islamic pilgrimages, and through which he emphasizes the importance of the direction of Sheikh.
This 1847 Istanbul printing of Izniki's work was printed in Arabic with each page having a double-line border around the text. A truly rare and rather obscure item found for sale in the English-speaking world.

Nunn; Longman, Hurst, and Rees; and Orm and Brown. Printed by S. and R. Bentley, Dorset Street, Salisbury Square, London. Boards detached and title page is loose along with engraving of Mahomet opposite title page, but both are laid in. Tanning to pages with some foxing. Pages are uneven cut which is common for a book of this age and some pages have closed end tears. The preface is not kind to Islam stating "The Publishers, in disclosing the doctrines of Allah, sinceerely invite the Christian believer to compare them, with the lenient and spiritual character of the Gospel, and in the contrast, the clearness of evangelical light will reveal the dark incongruities of Islamism." Francois Auguier de Marigny's "Histoire des Arabes" is one of the best and most thorough histories of the Muslim caliphs following the Muhammed. From the 6th-century on, caliphs were the leaders of the Islamic world, a position which was recognized into the 20th-century. In 750, the Abbasid Revolution overthrew the Umayyad's and the Abbasid Dynasty established a new line of caliph leadership, a line which would have the longest tenure of reign and ruled powerfully over much of the known world.
Marigny's "Arabes" covers the reigns of the earliest caliphs through the death of Al-Musta'sim in 1258. This impressive four-volume first edition was published in 1750 Paris.

A rare, 17th-century printing of the Quran in French. This highly desirable Islamic text was translated by Andre du Ryer, known for his accuracy in French translations. Du Ryer translated this work out of the Arabic into French; however, it was not well-received by the Catholic Church. In fact, Catholic priest Vincent de Paul prohibited the distribution of this work – the first French Quran to be banned when it was originally published!
