This book is in very good condition. There is minimal to no wear on the front, back and spine of the cover boards. There is no wear on the edges and some slight bumping on the top of the spine corners.The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front cover board and his stamp is affixed ro the front end page. This book is in good condition. The cover has some light wear and the corners are definitely worn. The previous owner's name is written on the inside of the front cover and his seal is affixed to the front cover. The pages are clear of any markings crisp and white. Biography of Thomas Wolsey, born c. 1475, made cardinal 1515, Henry VIII's lord chancellor, and from 1515-1529 Wolsey's rule in foreign affairs was near-complete. Unable to arrange an annulment for Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, and unpopular with those around Anne Boleyn, Henry's proposed new bride, Wolsey was arrested near York in November 1530 and accused of treason. He died on 29 November of the same year as he was traveling to face trial. Small hardcover is full bound in brown leather with four raised bands on spine creating five panels. The binding is intact. Hinges NOT cracked. The edges are heavily worn and rounded, exposing the boards at the tips. No lettering on spine; if there were any labels on the panels, they are gone. Minor fraying at the head of the spine. Covers are rubbed and scuffed with small stains. The front free endpaper and following flyleaf are detached but present; both are chipped at the edges. Front free endpaper has an old name in ink, partially transferred to the front endpaper. Pages lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple. First printing of Erasmus' critical edition of Quintus Curtius. This first century Roman biography of Alexander the Great was an early Renaissance bestseller, with editions from at least a dozen printers throughout Europe by 1517. Erasmus brought it as reading material on a voyage to England in 1517, and finding the text incomplete and corrupt, he prepared his own critical edition. This was first published by his friend Strasbourg printer Matthias Schürer in 1518.
