Killens was an important figure in the Black Arts Movement; African-American civil rights activist; creator of the Black Writerââ_x0082_‰_x0084_¢s Conference. Around 1950, Killens co-founded with Rosa Guy and others a writers' group that became the Harlem Writers Guild (HWG).
