Bristol, William Pine, 1789 1st. Large hardback, 11 x 8.5 inches. Original Tree-Calf leather boards with decorative gilt borders, later leather to spine with raised banding and gilt lettered maroon leather spine label. Marbled endpapers, speckled page edges. In very good condition. Boards quite heavily rubbed, especially on rear, leading corners bumped and chipped. Later Professional repair and leather to spine. Bookplate to front endpaper “Chalfont House.” With later label below “Castle Hacket, 1964.” Some areas of mild foxing to pages, mostly small spots throughout, some areas of darkening to a couple of page edges, some plates with minor and mild foxing, but mostly clean and bright. Else a very good clean and tight copy. 704pp. Illustrated with 27 (ex. 30) B&W engraved plates, many are large fold-outs, with some single and half-page plates, also one woodcut within text. With large folding map at front (dated 1780.) (Lacks plates 11; “The Old Castle,” 19; “St. James Church,” & 30; “Facsimile of Rowleys Manuscript.”)
