The Maltese Falcon

By Hammett, Dashiell

The Maltese Falcon, author Dashiell Hammett’s third novel, set the standard by which all subsequent detective fiction would be judged. Set in San Francisco in the late 1920s, the novel introduces us to private detective Sam Spade, who characterizes the archetype of the hard-boiled detective in his dead-pan pursuit of the recovery of a black figurine. Having worked for a time for the Pinkerton Detective Agency in San Francisco, Hammett reportedly drew upon his years as a detective in creating Spade and many of the other characters for The Maltese Falcon.

The Maltese Falcon was originally serialized in HL Mencken’s “pulp” magazine, Black Mask, beginning with the September 1929 issue. For publication of the book form, editor Blanche Knopf tried to tone down the overt sexuality of the magazine version, fearing the references would alienate readers, but Hammett prevailed. However, the 1941 film adaptation starring Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor (the best known of the novel’s three film versions) excised the homosexual subtext of the novel due to Production Code restraints. Today, the movie is considered a film noir classic and the novel is ranked 56th on Modern Library’s “100 Best” English-language novels of the 20th century as well as 54th on The Guardian’s list of the 100 best novels.

First edition identification and notes

Originally published in serial form in the magazine Black Mask, it was published in book form by Alfred A. Knopf in New York in 1930. Bound in grey cloth, the book is perhaps more well-known for its iconic yellow dust-jacket, with its deco typeface and stark image of a perched falcon. As is the custom for Alfred Knopf from this period, the first edition is recognizable by the absence of any statement of printing on the copyright page. The first state dust jacket has an advertisement on the rear panel for Hammett's other novels, priced at $2.00.

One of the most desirable of all modern first editions, the Maltese Falcon can fetch upwards of $100,000 in a pristine first state jacket, and easily five figures in a second state jacket.

The Maltese Falcon

Hammett, Dashiell

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy of the book in a nearly Fine dust jacket. Minor wear to the jacket at the spine ends, faint dampstain on the flap folds (with corresponding very faint dampstain on the cloth boards). Small tear at the top of the front panel, no loss. Jacket entirely unrestored. An exceptional copy of Hammett's masterpiece, housed in a custom clamshell case. Hammett's classic hard-boiled detective tale, which would go on to influence countless others in the genre. The story features the first appearance of Sam Spade - a character Hammett referred to as a man with "no original" - and was initially serialized in the classic pulp magazine Black Mask before it was published in book form. Hammett was inspired by his own work as a detective, which is thought have contributed to Hammett's lauded realism. Famed mystery author, Raymond Chandler, said of the work: "If you can show me 20 books written approximately 20 years back that have as much guts and life now, I'll eat them between slices of Edmund Wilson's head." The Maltese Falcon also inspired numerous films, including the 1941 noir classic of the same name, (which Variety called "one of the best examples of actionful and suspenseful melodramatic story telling in cinematic form") written and directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet. The film would be nominated for three Academy Awards - including Best Picture - and was chosen for preservation by the Library of Congress' National Film Registry. The novel appears on Modern Library's list of the 100 best English Language Novels of the 20th century. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

The 1931 film's reputation has been eclipsed by the 1941 John Huston version which starred Humphrey Bogart (the 1931 film starred Ricardo Cortez as Spade) and Mary Astor as Brigid O'Shaughnessy. Daniels married actor Ben Lyon in 1930; the film was released in May, 1931 to very favorable reviews, and its success was a huge boost to Hammett's career.

The Maltese Falcon (Collection of 20 original photographs from the 1931 pre-Code film)

Hammett, Dashiell (novel); Roy Del Ruth (director); Bebe Daniels, Ricardo Cortez (starring)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1931. Collection of 20 vintage studio still photographs from the 1931 pre-Code film, and the first adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's classic hard boiled novel. All but two images with the Warner Brothers / Vitaphone logo at the bottom margin. This first adaptation, made well prior to the establishment of the Hayes Code, carries a set of characters whose common quality is one of general immorality. John Huston's better known 1941 version would translate that quality into a dialogue-intensive, hard boiled (if much warmer) style. The principal image, of Ricardo Cortez as Sam Spade with the shadow of the falcon looming behind him, has the original snipe from the film, a "Received" stamp dated May 20, 1931 (eight days prior to the film's release date), and another date stamp of May 27, 1931. Other photos with various stamps relating to the studio or to the collection of Carlos Clarens. 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.5 cm). Three images faded to sepia, overall clean and Very Good to Near Fine. Complete collation details available on request.

Spine cloth imperceptibly toned, spine gilt slightly dulled, with a few scattered spots of foxing to the side of the textblock.
