Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwaite & Co., 1848. This map is from the 1848 edition of A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS CONTAINING MAPS OF THE VARIOUS EMPIRES. The atlas was based primarily on the H. S. Tanner UNIVERSAL ATLAS, the rights to which were purchased by Mitchell from Carey & Hart. The early Mitchell maps are distinguished by their vivid hand-coloring and attractive decorated borders. They are among the most sought-after ante-bellum maps published in the United States. This map is guaranteed to be authentic and more than 170 years old. It is in very good condition: clean and bright, with some toning. There is one tiny chip out of one corner of the sheet--far away from the image.. Original. Single Sheet. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Map.

Also includes poems by Bret Harte, Helen Hunt Jackson, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, George Sterling, Bayard Taylor, Edwin Markham, Robert Louis Stevenson, Joaquin Miller, Robinson Jeffers, Harriet Monroe, et al. (Refreshingly, it would appear that around 40% of the poems are by women.) 12mo green cloth boards stamped in gilt and yellow; 153 pages including index. Bright and near fine with just a touch of minor wear; in good, somewhat stained and edge-worn dust jacket with large chip from base of spine extending slightly to front and back panels but nonetheless bright and attractive. Scarce to rare in dust jacket.

Denver, (1870): S.S. Wallihan & Company. Octavo. The first year of publication. 442 pages, plus 7 full page ads in the front and 59 full page ads at the rear with ads found throughout the text. Besides being an important and the earliest accurate directory of Denver and other Colorado counties, it has a detailed list of the mines in all the counties (p. 174-216) Howes C 611 who notes this was printed in Chicago prior to the fire, thus, a pre-Chicago fire imprint. It also has the bookseller label of Raymer's Old Bookstore. He later removed to Minneapolis where he advertised using the same ad format in 1885 and then in 1889 was convicted of violating the second-hand dealer's ordinance for buying valuable books for only $1. Bound in original green cloth centrally stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt. Professional restoration to spine ends, light wear to corners, some soiling. A very good copy. The Boulder Publishing Company, 1910. Good. Interior age-toned but free of marks except for a newspaper article pinned to the title page which has discolored the title page underneath. The newspaper article contains an excerpt from Ingersoll's "Creed of Science." Paper wraps show significant shelf and handling wear with penciled marks, stains, creases, overall soiling, tears, missing pieces, and edge and corner wear. An interesting bit of Western history. Photo is of the copy we have here at Barbed Wire Books. Scarce.

Signed. Born in 1875, Forest McNeir moved to the Galveston Bay area and did a bunch of stuff; oystering, selling cow hides, until he landed in the construction business. He wrote the book when he was 80, for the benefit of his children. The book is in great shape, the corners are crisp, and the spine is not sun damaged or rubbed. It's a little dusty and a little cocked, but the pages are clean and unmarked. The dust jacket is rough; it has chips, tears and stains all around, but it's intact; it did its job. The author has inscribed, dated and signed the book on the half title page. This book has been reprinted, but this is the 1956 edition.
