London: James Macrone, 1836. 273 pages and xxx appendix. Later half calf and marbled boards. Ownership signature of James Grant. General De Lacy Evans raised a force of British half pay officers and mostly Irish volunteers to fight on behalf of Queen Christina against the usurping Don Carlos. Thompson was wounded in the hip at San Sebastian on 5th May 1836.

London: Smith Elder, 1858. 204 pages. A very good copy recased in the publisher's salmon cloth blind; the covers are a trifle dusty and the headcap has been neatly repaired. Sorsky 374. Ladendorf 260 with note 'excellent evidence for conditions in the countryside by an unusually unbiased observer'. Later half maroon calf; a few of the maps have been carelessly refolded but none are damaged. 750 copies were printed but this original edition is harder to find than that figure suggests since many copies had not been distributed before Indian Independence. Robert Kellogg's 'Life and Death in Rebel Prisons' is a rare Civil War account of prisoners of war and conditions of Confederate prisons. According to Nevins,
"A sergeant's journal of captivity, reworked by the editor; very bitter over deliberate cruelty to prisoners, but also gives facts tending to show the opposite."
The contents describe prisoners in Andersonville, Atlanta, Millen and Libby prisons, and other notable prisons, as well as descriptions of prison hospitals in the South.

Samuel Pepys was a 17th-century English naval administrator and politician who is best-known for his diary. His diary was a daily journal account of his life, kept for nearly ten years. It is an important and thoroughly detailed account of Pepys's life as well as major British events and life in London from the second half of the 1600s.

Interestingly, only one work of Pepys was published during his lifetime. His 'State of the Royal Navy of England' was published in 1690 and covers the state of the Royal Navy leading up to the Glorious Revolution and his demands for change. Notable topics include:
