Chicago IL: American School of Correspondence, 1921. Hard Cover. Good/No Dust Jacket. Set of four books, parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the course. Preserved in each book is the certificate of completion (certified exam grade form, from the school) of the previous owner (circa 1921). He passed the course. All are intact with some general wear. Typed name of previous owner attached to endpapers of each book. Some beginning binding weakness. Red hardcovers with some wear and age toning, edge bumps, etc. All together a nicely preserved complete set of this coursework.

Contemporary Tree Calf, recent re-back and new headbands. PP207,title page watermarked 1801, seven folding plates of engineering and mathematical diagrams. Neat, early ownership mark on front pastedown of George Wayne M.E. Skillful repairs to three plates, with very small loss on one plate mainly to blank and fold line area. Pages lightly browned in clean and bright order throughout. A rare early work on mine surveying.

DeMorgan is best known for DeMorgan's Theorem (!A AND !B) == !(A OR B), which forms the basis of the modern technique used to miniaturise complex digital circuits, and thus delivers the extremely high density computing power of the today's microprocessor.

His work on probabilities is a land mark piece of mathematical theory that formed the basis of the actuarial calculations of life insurance policy risks. This is the rare first edition of this work, which appeared in the Library of Useful Knowledge. These were a series of learned papers prepared by the leading scientists and academics of the day, each being either 64 or 32 pages long – and sold at low cost to provide a source for knowledge “for the working man”. The boards are a little marked and the spines a bit dulled but still very good copies. In original green paper dustwrappers, printed in dark blue, with some darkening to the spines and minor chipping to the extremities but generally very good. ----- Originally published in 1910, 1912 and 1913, the second edition appeared in 1925 and 1927 with a new introduction and three appendices.
