He afterward studied jurisprudence in the seminary at Puebla, and was admitted to the bar in 1847. He was sent to the city of Mexico in 1851 to defend a lawsuit for the state, and in the next year appointed director of the national archives. He was secretary of public works from 1857 till the fall of the Liberal government, and in 1860 was professor of geography and history in the military college. On July 14, 1763, after fleeing his apprenticeship, Bancroft left New England for the sugar-producing slave colonies of Dutch Guiana, where he became a plantation doctor. His name was "Hispanicised" by his fellow Jesuits to Nicolas del Techo shortly after he was ordained in the Society of Jesus at the age of 19. He arrived in the Province of Paraguay (a region that then included parts of present-day Paraguay and Uruguay) in 1649 where he sought to convert the indigenous people (the Guarani Indians) to Christianity. All maps, photos and drawings intact; binding is tight but is cracked on the spine with all parts present and legible; edges rubbed and bumped, upper corner repaired with transparent tape; one foldout was apparently cut too long and the far edge is chipped and browned as indicated in the images; Morley's comprehensive study of the monuments and their inscriptions at the Honduran site of Copan, now a World Heritage Site. The volume is in remarkable shape with the foldouts appearing not to have been opened.

The book is bound in blue cloth with a vignette of Magellan's ship, the Victoria, stamped in gilt at the center of the front cover. The spine is badly sun faded, and there is minor fading across the top inch of the back cover. There is a small bookplate (blank) at the top left corner of the first paste-down page. Text is otherwise clean with no extraneous writing or marks. "The Fifth Letter" is No. 40 in the first series of publications by the Hakluyt Society between 1847 and 1873. It includes not only the letter from Cortes, dated 1526, but the society's 1868 annual report.
