Gervais-François Magné de Marolles was an 18th-century French author who is most famous for his landmark treatise on rifle hunting 'La Chasse au Fusil', or 'Essay on the Rifle Hunt'. This extensive and highly detailed book features two sections – studies on the effectiveness of rifles on hunting and hunting tactics before the invention of guns, and the second on strategy and knowledge needed to be an effective hunter. Also includes information on training hunting dogs, tactics on how to hunt different species of big game, and how to tactfully approach birds.

1804 1st print Thornhill Shooting Directory HUNTING Color Illustrated Sport Guns

Richard Thornhill's 'Shooting Directory' is one of, if not the best early 19th-century shooting and hunting manual. This incredible folio hunting guide is a collection of discussions on hunting dogs, firearms and gunpowder, shooting styles, and of course descriptions of game animals. While hunting books have always been popular amongst sportsmen, this particular book is known to have more draw than most because of its exquisite full-page, color engravings!

This incredibly rare and valuable true first printing includes pages 214-220 which were suppressed from later editions. These pages highly criticized the hunting ability and shooting techniques of King George III. It is certainly because of these claims that, following the publication of this book, Thornhill moved from England to live full-time in Paris.

A lovely copy of this scarce rifle training manual, written by Theodore Thaddeus Sobieski Laidley, a Civil War veteran, serving post-war as the Colonel of Ordnance at the Watertown Arsenal in Massachusetts.

Author's hand-written poem on verso of front free end paper, with his signed inscription on the following page. Bound in publisher's full calf illustrated on the front cover in gilt, with red silk end sheets and deckled edges, with 12 mounted color photographs by Henry Jackson plus 18 halftone images in the text. Very Good, with binding lightly rubbed, spine lightly creased. Fragile silk rear endsheet is partially lifted, and there is a thin strip excised from the front. A scarce and well-preserved volume pertaining to travels in Yellowstone, featuring full page color photographs of famous natural monuments.

George Wingate entered the Civil War as a private in the New York State Guard. He soon discovered that the militia had very poor shooting skills, and devoted himself to correcting that failing. By the end of the war he had been promoted to Captain, and was recognized as a leading expert on marksmanship training. William Conant Church was the editor of the Army and Navy Journal. After the war he recognized Wingate's expertise and asked him to write a series of articles on marksmanship and rifle training which he published in the Journal.
These articles were immediately widely and highly acclaimed. Church and Wingate decided an organization was needed to facilitate the spread of this knowledge, and together founded The National Rifle Association. The articles from the Army and Navy Journal were collected, and along with additional material were published in 1872 as "Manual for Rifle Practice".
