Antoine Varillas was a French historiographer who is remembered for his numerous historical accounts of French royals such as King Louis XI, Louis XII, Henri II, and even Saint Louis.Unfortunately, his writings received little recognition. As a result, his scholarly reputation was negatively impacted. Initially having high hopes, his works failed to reach the status he had desired during his lifetime. It was not until much later that the public would show interest in his writings.
In 1685, Varillas' book on the lives and reigns of Saint Louis, Louis XI, and Henri II was published in La Haye.

[Original manuscript], [c.1805]. Original ink manuscript letter. 30 x 22.2cm. The paper watermarked with a French imperial eagle and the name of the papermaker "Poviata". Small ink stamp "Bibliotheca Lindesiana" to the lower-right corner, indicating that the letter was once part of the great library formed by the Lindsay family, Earls of Crawford and Balcarres. Condition is very good with a couple of minor chips to the blank lower margin, two light diagonal creases to the top-right corner, and an old linen mount to the left-hand margin where the letter was once inserted into an album. Binding is rubbed and bumped with some scuffing on the boards. Hinges are secure. All edges marbled. Several pencil markings as well as a small library ink stamp on the title page. A piece of paper was laid between the title page and the Preface page, resulting in heavy browning on the Preface. The browning also affect the title page and a few pages after. The text is toned with occasional foxing. Text is in French. The title translates to "Of the Colonies and Particularly that of Saint-Domingue; Historical and Political Memory."
