Accordion fold .A continuous image print assembled from five mixed linocut and woodcut prints bound together. Each of the five images was made with four separate plates measuring 24" x 18" printed on Rives BFK paper. Bound in red and cream paper covered boards. Signed and numbered by the artist on the title page. Edition of 20: copies 1 -10 bound as accordion fold book format; 11 - 20 unbound. Hazelwood and his work stand proudly and boldly in the tradition of artist as social critic. Requiem for Dionysus addresses the US's early response to 9/11. This is a very rare bound volume of the 1st 66 issues of the publication "YOUTH'S TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE" from 1839 to the 1840's. The "magazine" was first published in 1839 (issues 1 and 2) and continued into the 1860's. The issues contain wonderful woodcuts throughout. In addition to the articles, the issues also include songs, cartoons and poems aimed at steering youth away from the consumption of alcohol, and pointing out the dangers and pitfalls of drinking. It is rare to find a single issue of this publication, let alone a complete run of 66 issues beginning with issue No. 1. Issued together with a trade catalogue for the soda water supply firm of John Matthews of New York, an important manufacturer of bottling equipment, soda fountains, and carbonation apparatus. The fountains get progressively larger and more elaborate, and with wonderful names: "The Citadel", "The Horicon", "The Adriatic", "The Fire-Eater", "The Nepenthe", and "The Snow Queen". There I also an outdoor soda fountain, "The Street Spa". Also included are the auxiliary equipment of the carbonated water industry, like siphon boxes for home delivery of soda water. All of the the dust jacket blurbs are supplied by Joe Madden. Madden's bartending world is rough and tumble, occasionally crass and frequently politically incorrect. Edges a bit dusty, some light age-toning throughout, otherwise fine in bright orange cloth, in a very good, unclipped dust jacket with a bit of darkening to the spine and very light edgewear. Boldly inscribed by the author on the front free end paper, "To one of Coach Murray's half backs, but he says he wuz the manager, my error. An alright guy too. Most sincerely, Joe Madden."

Contains detailed information on blending to create imitations of popular spirits, but also recipes for bitters, cordials, essences, syrups, and more. The author's preface states, "It is a generally well understood fact that the thirsty individual who takes his glass of whiskey at any of even the first-class public bars, saloons, or parlors, does not know what he drinks." A trade catalog for the distinctive and elaborate bottles for wine and spirits from the firm of Destilerias Hilario Botella, from Jativa in Spanish Valencia. The first offerings are the highly decorated bottles in styles such as Anfora Valenciana, Nagasaki del Japon, Carmen, Sevilla, Piramidal, Conica, and most exciting, the Botella Pinguino Patentada- a 1000 gram bottle in the shape of a penguin. Bottles for dozens of types of spirits are included, as well as a lemonade dispensing device, and two pages of fine leather goods. Some offsetting throughout; rear wrapper panel soiled, but mostly clean and bright. Some early ink scribbles to front wrapper verso, otherwise generally very good or better. Scarce. One of the very rare precursors to the famous Old Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide (1935). Following Repeal, Ben-Burk Distillers published the Guide, which was to become one of the iconic cocktail recipe books. Originally published as a promotional item for the Ben-Burk line of spirits distilled in Boston, the Guide became a staple of professional and home bars around the country. But prior to the first work titled Old Mr. Boston Guide, Ben-Burk published One Hundred Cocktails, Some Old -- Some New (1932) and One Hundred and Twenty Cocktails, Fizzes, Punches, Highballs, Toddies and Long Drinks (1934), both of which are very rare.
