Rare and Antiquarian Books

Dictionaries

In addition to rare novels, autobiographies, and non-fiction academic books, Biblio also features a wide variety of rare and antique dictionaries. Many of the rare dictionaries that are featured in the Biblio Rare Book Room are old foreign dictionaries, and others are multi-volume sets of original American English dictionaries and encyclopedias. Some of the rare dictionaries also include little-known grammatical details that would be sure to thrill any linguist.

There are no markings on the pages. "Because this volume represents a new idea in dictionaries, an explanation of its purpose may be helpful. In nine cases out of ten when you go to the dictionary it is to find how to spell a word or how to divide it at the end of the line. Webster's great dictionary, all the 70,000 entries of which he wrote with his own hand, has been reprinted and brought up to date innumerable times. The book marked a definite advance in modern lexicography, as it included many non-literary terms and paid… Read More
