1780 softcover pamphlet in very good condition. Paginates: (iii)-viii, [2], (9)-101, blank, lacking the half-title (if it ever existed). Second edition. Pencil notes of prior book seller on title page, no other markings, creases or interior problems. Bound in quality laid paper wraps. A very nice copy. The paper is wonderful example of the paper making trade in 1780's London. Content is scathing satire and complaints about, among other things, the loss of the colonies. A nice copy. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. Hard to find and still unsurpassed in depth and insight by Gertrude Loomis, one of the trio of academic wives of Roger Sherman Loomis. Here is the more desirable Second Edition with it's updated work by Roger Sherman Loomis. The Celtic Goddess aspect of the Fairy paramour was one of the themes of Loomis research. Here the French, German, Welsh, and English contributions are studied. While these are Ex-library copies the markings are not overwhelmingly so. NO Spine Numbers, NO library book plates.
