1803 1st ed Robert Percival Voyages CEYLON Dutch Torture MAPS 2v SET Sri Lanka

Robert Percival was an 18th-century Irish army officer who is best known for his extensive voyage to the Island of Ceylon, or Sri Lanka. This voyage, which began in 1797, was an important voyage as it brought new discoveries to Great Britain prior to Britain's rule of the island. Percival specifically outlined manners and customs of locals, as well as climate and natural science discoveries.

According to the DNB on this work, Percival
"notices the effects of the Portuguese and Dutch rule, which looked as if it tried to counteract as much as possible the natural advantages of the island. He gives various instances of Dutch cruelty and treachery, and attempts to characterize three classes of 'natives' – the Cingalese, the Candians, and the Malays. The pearl fishery, the town and forts of Columbo, the salt works of the island, the staple commodity of cinnamon, above all, the inland capital of Candy, are noticed in other… Read More

Description:
1862 Japanese Woodblock Print Shaka Hasso Demon Boar Samurai Color Illustrated

A rare, 19th-century Japanese woodblock print of 'Shaka Hassou Yamato Bunko." "Shaka Hassou Yamato Bunko" is a biography of Buddha written by Mantei Oga and illustrated by Ichiyousai Toyokuni. Buddhism originated in Northern India, or present-day Nepal where the historical Buddha (Prince Siddhartha, Gautama Buddha), was born and lived. When Buddhism arrived in Japan, Siddhartha became known in Japan as Shaka or Shakamuni. Stories of Shaka's life were commonly told through selecting eight events to represent his life. This 'Shaka Hassou,' was aimed at the general populace, using the "eight phases" as a device to teach the important points of Shaka's life as well as a means of entertainment.
This rare 1862 edition is written in the typical handwritten column format with illustrations of animals, battles, samurai, courtesans, demon boar, and more!

Description:
This delightful pictorial map focusing on the North Pacific Ocean was distributed as a premium in connection with the syndicated radio program, "Air Adventures of Jimmie Allen." The program, featuring Jimmie Allen as an adventurous 16-year old pilot, ran from 1933 to 1937 and from 1946 to 1947 and was sponsored initially by the Skelly Oil Company.

Background on the show appears on the Radio Days Theater of the Mind Museum website (http://radiodaysmuseum.org):
"Broadcast History: 1933 to 1937 and 1946 to 1947.
The writers of Jimmie Allen had been flying aces in World War I. They came up with the idea of a show about a boy pilot while at a party in Kansas City and used their experience as pilots to create and write the show.
The show was one of the first to capitalize on the idea of a club as a promotional tool. To join the Jimmie Allen Flying Club all a child had to do was apply at any Skelly Gas Station (the initial sponsor). As a member the child received a whole host of goodies ranging from a… Read More
