A prodigious reference on the English language, covering every conceivable aspect of grammar and usage, plus substantial material on the origins and history of the English tongue. Divided into four sections: Orthography, Etymology, Syntax, and Prosody, plus a 138-page "Key To The Improprieties For Correction," and a substantial four-part Appendix. Very Good, spine panel moderately sunned. Pages clean, crisp, no foxing, binding tight, sound, and square, corners sharp, no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind. Not an ex-library. A grammatical masterwork, by an indefatigable American grammarian.

They both are listed as VOLUME I but each covers two different periods in English history (period one and period two). Hardcovers quarter bound in dark blue cloth with light blue cloth covered boards. Bindings are spotted, have scuffing, light foxing. The period one book has a gouge to the fore-edge of the rear board. The period two book has a dark stain mark at the top of the front board. All edges of text blocks are gilt. The gilt is dulled, Marbled endpapers. Text has light toning. Some pages are smudged. Photographs throughout.

The book is inscribed "This was my mother's labor of love just before she died ...". It is signed Rachel, who is the daughter of Charlotte and Gen. Maxwell. It is warmly inscribed to Margaret, who was Margaret McDermott of Dallas, Texas. The book was purchased from the McDermott estate. The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.
Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
