Quarto. xvii, 583pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of White Kennet, 3 further plates, two of which are folding; 526pp + indices [3X-4F2] + glossary [A-N], 6 folding engraved plates. (10 engraved plates in total, or which 8 are folding). All edges red. Contemporary full calf, spines in six compartments with gilt tooling and faded leather labels. Upper joints and hinges cracked. Upper hinges repaired with cloth tape. Boards scuffed with some surface loss. Rubbed to extremities and spines. Light foxing to the frontispiece. Internally the text and plates are formly bound, crisp, bright and clean with occasional spotting and light offsetting.

Original First Edition. 7 preliminary leaves, two volumes in one: 80, 392 pages; good condition: rebound in late eighteenth, or early nineteenth century brown mottled calf, with gilt decorated spine laid down, raised bands, (missing label), minor wear to covers at front hinge (not affecting contents), lacking frontis.

There are thiry-one letters are that supposedly give insight into secret diplomatic transactions between the English and French courts. "History of the Stuarts," is a perceptive contemporaneous account.

Description:
The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.
Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
All proceeds benefit The Friends of the San Anselmo Library. No expedited shipping on this set. Extra charges for sending the set will be added to the order after shipping to match the actual cost of mailing.
