Description:
1681 ROME Valerius Maximus DictorumFactorum Tiberius Latin Dutch Minellius
A rare printing of Valerius's "Dictorum et Factorum" or Historical Anecdotes. This work is a collection of short stories, sayings, and phrases, memorial to Tiberius Caesar, who was reigning during Valerius's lifetime. These anecdotes depict ancient Greek life and philosophy as well as famous kings and Caesars. Many modern historians claim that Valerius's work was taken from Cicero, Livy, and Sallust, as well as other ancient historians and philosophers, rather than creating original works.
However, many of the topics he writes about were controversial and unusual for the time – he wrote on homosexuality within the Roman army and the aristocracy of ancient Greece. While homosexually itself was written on, it was only considered tolerable in a 'master-slave' relationship, not within a public and high-status sense. Other topics include omens, revenge, superstitious cults, women lawyers, modesty, crimes, and conflicting… Read More

Description:
1658 Alexander the Great Quintus Curtius Rufus Greece ROME Elzevier RARE

"Nothing can be lasting when reason does not rule."
― Quintus Curtius Rufus, Histories of Alexander the Great
This famous and important work by Quintus Curtius was inspired by the celebrated Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great and was written, more than likely, during the reign of Caligula in Rome. The style of Quintus Curtius's writing was directly in line with Livy, whose work on the people of Rome greatly influenced the writing of "Histories of Alexander the Great." Curtius describes the strange and mysterious things that Alexander the Great encounters on his military expedition and does so with great historical acumen. This book, along with Livy and Tacitus, should always be considered part of the canon of ancient world texts.
This rare 1658 printing was published by Elzevier in Lyon which included the notes of Matthaus Rader, Nicolaas Blanckaert, and Johann Freinsheim.

Description:
1669 John Sleidan Four Empires GREECE Rome Babylon Persia Key of History Horn
Johannes Sleidanus was a 16th-century historian who is best remembered for his commentary and analysis of the Protestant Reformation. He collected as all papers and manuscripts concerning the Reformation to which he had access (particularly those of Martin Luther) and edited them as part of his 'Commentary on State, Religion, and Republic'. And while his contributions to the growth of popularity of the Reformation was his greatest work, he also published a book on the history of the world.
'The Four Empires', also known as 'The Key of History', is a methodical history of four the most important kingdoms of the world – Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. He describes important world events, beginning with Flood of Noah, through Roman emperors, the reign of Alexander the Great, and much more. This 1669 edition includes notes and commentary by Georg Horn.

Description:
1781 Annals of Maria Theresa HAPSBURG Austria Holy Roman Empire Illustrated
A rare, 18th-century account of the life and reign of Maria Theresa of the Holy Roman Empire and the Hapsburgs. Written by abbe Fromageot, this work is a supportive treatise which, according to Russell and Coote, omitted many of the ills and controversies of Maria Theresa's reign. In fact, these experts claim that much of the work features 'wilful suppression' of these details to ensure the princess's positive views.

Description:
1632 1ed Historiae Augustae Ancient ROME Emperors Commodus Maximus 5v SET Vellum

"Historiae Augustae" is a rare, 17th-century collection of ancient Roman histories of Roman Emperors by many of the 'minor' classical historians. Many of these histories were written during the reigns of Constantine the Great but cover the reigns of rulers such as Hadrian, Caracalla, Geta, Antonius, Albinus, Maximus and Balbinus, Cassius, Commodus, Heliogabalus, Severus Alexander, and many others. While the biographies are the appeal of this work, the authors themselves shouldn't be overlooked.

The 30-sum biographies were written by Aelius Spartianus, Julius Capitolinus, Vulcacius Gallicanus, Aelius Lampridius, Trebellius Pollio, and Flavius Vopiscus Syracusanus. This particular 1632 edition of "Historiae Augustae" was edited by Vossius and Boxhorn and published in five, charming tomes.

Book cover like new - pages clean, bright and unmarked – spine like new.
No dust jacket issued with this book.
Proceeds benefit Friends of the Library; books sold are NOT ex-library.
"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
Despite the cover and title page, the series is the Catalog of Anomalies and is devoted to documenting phenomena in a range of fields that science cannot explain. This is the first volume to concern archaeology. Mere size or mass is not sufficient for mention; the criteria include high degrees of innovation, precocious use of technology and science, apparent lack of purpose, and the unknown identity of the builders. Findings here are used as evidence that the Vikings ventured well beyond Newfoundland, that extensive pre-Columbian contacts existed between the Old and New Worlds, and that vastly superior civilizations preceded our own.

1880 FAMED Edward Gibbon Roman Empire Decline & Fall of Caesar ROME Illustrated

"Lo, there appeared a truly classic work: a history not majestic like Livy, nor compressed like Tacitus; not stamped with character like Clarendon; perhaps not so deep as Robertson's 'Scotland,' but a thousand degrees above his 'Charles'."
– Allibone, on Gibbon's 'History'

Originally printed in 1776, "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" was written in six volumes by Edward Gibbon. It has maintained its status as one of the most important literary achievements of the 18th-century and saw numerous editions. This book's popularity was partly due to it becoming the model used by modern historians and historical authors. This led to Gibbon being considered the first modern historian on the Roman Empire.

Important contents include:
· Gibbon's religious, or secular, views on the Quran and Mohammed
· The advancement of Christianity leading to the demise of Rome
