Paper over top and bottom boards is rubbed and worn, and there is some loss of paper. Hinges (internal) are cracked, though holding solid. Text block remains tight. Inked address stamp at top of advertising front paste down, and heavily penciled name/address at top of advertising front free end page. Ink stamped address is also seen at the top of the advertising rear free end leaf. Front end leaves are a little soiled and smudged. Remaining contents are generally clean with a little age and foxing on edges, and occasional smudges.

1657 Lucius Florus History of Ancient Rome + Ampelius Liber Memorialis Salmasius

Florus was a Roman historian who lived during the 2nd-century AD. His history of Rome was collected by Livy, and mainly focuses on the foundation of Rome though the end of the B.C. era. The work is considered inaccurate, especially compared to Livy's much more popular and famous History of Rome.

This 1657 Elzevier edition of Florus was edited by the 17th-century French classist Claudius Salmasius. First appearing in 1638, this book not only includes Florus but also an edition of Lucius Ampelius's 'Liber Memorialis'. This work is an ancient index of 1st-century Roman history focusing on cosmography, mythology, and geography during the Republican period of Rome. Curiously, this is only the second known edition of Ampelius.

1557 1ed Witekind Lives Caesars Suda Byzantine ROME Latin Melanchthon Wittenberg

Little is known of Hermann Witekind other than that he studied with Melanchthon in Wittenberg. At the suggestion of Melanchthon, Witekind set to translating the Greek encyclopedia, the 'Suda'. This work, attributed to an author named Soudas, covers the lives of important Roman and Byzantine rulers. According to Knight, this encyclopedia was
"the most important Greek lexicon or encyclopedia – one of the most valuable documents of Greek philology, grammar, and literary history."

1747 ROME Nieupoort Senate Roman Law Customs Mythology Cicero Latin Utrecht
Willem Nieupoort, a 17th-century Dutch historian, wrote 'Rituum' as a supplement to traditional Roman antiquarian studies. He outlined various aspects of Roman orders including the establishment of Rome and the Roman Senate, the offices of religious priests, liturgical rites, and the importance of games and amphitheater entertainments. There is also an important section focused on the Roman army as well as a section on the private lives of Romans, exploring their clothing, customs, coins, and celebrations.
Nieupoort was a well-known and respected jurist of his time, thus much of his perspective in this work involves Roman law. He acknowledges the importance of Cicero, Plato, and other philosophers, but also mentions the Roman focus on mythology.

Demosthenes's orations are considered some of the most significant and important speeches on the politics of ancient Greek culture and Greek law. He spoke out about the use of the Greek navy, the importance of freedom, Athenian law, and the governing of the people. is a series of letters by Cicero to Roman public figures. They are considered the most reliable source of information for the period leading up the fall of the Roman Republic. It includes history of Rome, Julius Caesar, Brutus, and other important influences.
This rare 17th-century edition was published by Henri Wetsten in Amsterdam and is notable, not just for the Cicero, but for the enormous commentary included in each tome. Commentary includes notes from Graevius, Gronovius, Lambin, Paolo Manuzio, Orsini, and Ragazzoni. An impressive edition of Cicero.

William Roger Corliss (August 28, 1926 - July 8, 2011) was an American physicist and writer who was known for his interest in collecting data regarding anomalous phenomena. Arthur C. Clarke described him as "Charles Fort's latter-day - and much more scientific - successor."

This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
