This is the rare FIRST EDITION, published in Philadelphia in 1817. The author's observations on his travels in the United States, and his plans to establish a colony in the Illinois Territory. Flat with plastic against dirtExcellent early map of the region. Kansas counties cover only the eastern third of the state. Nebraska counties cover less than half the state. Colorado has only approximately 15 counties. The gold regions near Denver are shown, as are a number of Indian tribes, early towns, forts, etc. Dakota includes all of Wyoming.
The map shows early proposed railroads, forts, Indian tribes, rivers, mountains, etc. The plains region is still very much in transition, with the results of several major explorations commenced immediately after the civil war are not yet in evidence.
Also shows portions of New Mexico, Texas and Indian Territory.

John H Beadle was a member of the Mormon expedition across the United States to the American West. He made notes and reports on the excursion and ultimately published a fascinating work on every aspect of the trip. Beadle includes a full-account of the Mountain Meadow Massacre, countering Native Americans, descriptions of terrain, and much more. His book 'Life in Utah' has become one of the most prominent anti-Mormon books from the 19th-century. According to the publisher's remarks,
"For more than thirty years the world has been horrified, startled and perplexed by the audacity and success of a sect calling themselves Mormons. Though founded in fraud, this sect has succeeded in spite of all opposition, until it is to-day the standing reproach of our country."

Some uneven toning to cloth, light dust soiling to top edge, pale stain at margin of title page. Otherwise claan and sound. In the scarce original dust jacket, which has some short tears and small losses, but is well-preserved and attractive overall, with the original $2.50 price present. The first biography of Wilbur and Orville Wright. As described on the dust jacket: "Basing his book on the unpublished letters and diaries of the two men, and on data obtained from Orville and his family, the author has laid strong stress on the personal and human side. It is a charming and sympathetic picture of an unusually devoted family life...and of the steady pursuit of an ideal through all sorts of difficulties and setbacks.

New York: Random House, 1973. Uncorrected First Proof copy. Octavo. 190pp. Publisher's red paper wraps titled in black to front cover. Some light scuffing, and a couple of spots of grubbiness to the covers, but essentially a clean, tight copy. Internally clean, a pencil annotation "April..?" to the title page. A scarce proof copy of the first book on Black reparations and which Morrison guided into print as an editor at Random House. Written by a white professor at Yale, Morrison felt the book was "an important contribution to the fledgling reparations debate." A significant proof on its own, of a book that was an origin point for the intellectual debate about reparations for many decades, but also because it documents Morrison's incredible tenure and astute publishing history during her tenure at Random House. Necessarily scarce.
