Description:
1848 Mississippi Exploration Indian Wars Color MAP Western Americana Monette

'History of the discovery and settlement of the valley of the Mississippi' is the history of the Americas along and around the Mississippi river. It is told primarily from the perspective of the Indian Wars between Native Americans and France, Spain, and Great Britain.
"The first volume is principally occupied with a relation of the French and Spanish discovery of the territory, and the association of the colonial governments of these nations with the Indians, and their wars with the various tribes inhabiting it. Much of the larger portion of Vol. II. is devoted to a narration of the Indian wars of the States bordering the Ohio. The work is probably the best of the numerous class of books on the subject of western history" (Field).

This 1848 edition includes:
·
First Spanish discoveries in Florida 1512 to 1538 --
·
Exploration of the Mississippi River by La Salle: his colony on the Colorado 1673 to 1696 -… Read More

Some edgewear to dust jacket along head and foot; small chip to base of spine; rubbing to panels with an abrasion to rear dust jacket panel. Fine in a very good dust jacket.. First edition of Cold Friday, published posthumously by Random House in 1964 after the death of Whittaker Chambers (1901-1961) in 1961. Although Chambers became a household name after the publication of his influential autobiography Witness in 1952, it is in Cold Friday that the full breadth of Chambers' poignant vision is unfurled throughout posthumously published essays, diary entries, and correspondence. Description:
New York: Farrar. Straus & Giroux, (1966). First edition. Foreword by Ralph McGill. Memoir covering the period after the Supreme Court's 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education when, in 1956, federal judge Robert Taylor ordered Clinton High School in Tennessee to desegregate with "all deliberate speed." Margaret Vance Anderson (1917-2008) was a business and typing teacher at Clinton at the time who soon became the unofficial guidance counselor for the "Clinton 12" - the first twelve Black students to attend the school. She later earned degrees to formalize that position. Her series of articles for The New York Times Magazine written over a period of eight years formed the basis for this memoir in which Anderson often lets students, both Black and White, speak for themselves as she details her experiences and those of her students in the decade following desegregation. Fine in near fine dust jacket with few tiny nicks to head of spine. Scarce.
