Nineteen Eighty-Four

By Orwell, George

Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) by George Orwell has become the definitive dystopian novel of the twentieth century.

Originally published in on June 8, 1949 by Secker and Warburg in the United Kingdom, the book follows the main character, Winston Smith, through his disillusionment with totalitarianism and a doomed struggle of resistance. George Orwell is a pen-name, Orwell's real name was Eric Blair.

First edition identification and notes

The overall quality of the printing of this first edition is high. Some commonly found defects include missing plates, damage to the frontispiece or endpapers, and age-tanned pages. Blair died six months after publication of this, his last novel. Very rare signed copies have significant value, with some volumes priced near $10,000 USD. Because of this, numerous attempts have been made at forging the author's signature, and care should be taken to authenticate a signed copy. Unsigned first-edition first-printing British editions in mint condition can sometimes be priced in the $2,000 to $3,000 range (USD).

The first US edition was printed by Harcourt, Brace and Company in 1949, only five days after the U.K. Edition. The UK edition first printing ran 26,575 copies, the US edition approximately 20,000. The book was an instant best seller in both Great Britain and the United States.

Nineteen Eighty-Four.

ORWELL, George.

London: Secker & Warburg,, 1949. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in red, top edge red. With the red dust jacket. Housed in a red cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Pencilled ownership signature to front free endpaper; W. H. Smith bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Slight lean to spine, faint ring-stain to front cover, very minor wear to top corner of front cover. A very good copy in the jacket, ring-stain to front panel and faint soiling to rear panel, some chipping and creasing around extremities with light loss to lettering on front panel. The spine panel - very prone to fading - is here entirely unsunned. First edition, first impression, in the preferred red dust jacket. Copies of the first impression were issued either in green or dark red dust jackets. To judge from surviving examples, this was done in proportions of about two green to one red and consequently the red is scarcer, but there is no priority between them.

Nineteen Eighty-Four - Orwell's Agents' copies with their bookplates - both Maroon and Green dust wrapper

Orwell, George

London: Secker and Warburg, 1949. A pair of first editions of Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four'. Both carry the Christy Moore bookplate to the end pastedowns. Some spotting to the maroon variant books. Both book are very good+ in like wrappers. There is chipping to the wrappers, more so to the head of the green wrapper. The green wrapper is unclipped and has WIDER end flaps - indicative of a proof dust wrapper. There is a small amount of light restoration to the price on the end flap. The maroon variant is clipped and has the usual fading to the spine. Housed in a custom-made slipcase with divider and gilt titles. A rare pair of Orwell's masterpiece.

Nineteen Eighty-Four

Orwell, George [Pseud. Eric Blair]

London: Secker & Warburg 1949, 1st edition. (hardcover) [1-5], 6-312pp. Very good in very good dust jacket. 8vo. In original green calico-textured cloth boards, lettering in red to spine. Top edge coloured maroon. Spine of cloth slightly sunned in same place as jacket. Light spots of discoloration to corners. Else a very attractive copy without notable blemish or repair. Internally fine; bright and clean. In first state maroon dust jacket, not price clipped (showing 10s net on front flap). Dust jacket spine faded to grey-rose, as is notoriously common; light sunning to front of jacket on slight angle at meeting of spine and front panel. Dust jacket with edgewear, light chipping at head and heal of spine; small closed tear at head of front panel. Attractive in mylar. When Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published on June 08, 1949, it was issued in two different coloured dust jackets: green and maroon. Formally, there is no priority established between the two variants; the jackets differ only in their base colour and are identical in design and issue. However, the maroon jacket is decidedly scarcer in the market, and it appears it always has been. By some estimates, the jacket variants were initially issued in proportions of two green to one maroon. As such, copies in maroon jackets have become highly sought and are exceedingly collectible. The maroon jacket's notorious fragility and susceptibility to fading has only served to stoke the fires of collector passions for presentable copies, unclipped with minimal notable blemishes. [Fenwick A.12a] [Rodden, 2001]. Nineteen Eighty-Four was adapted into the acclaimed British film by the same name, aptly released in 1984. The central character of the story, Winston Smith, was played by the renowned British actor Sir John Hurt. The film received several domestic and international nominations, including earning awards for Best British Film of the Year and the Gold Tulip Award at the Istanbul International Film Festival (1985). Hurt himself received several awards for his now infamous role, including the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Actor, Fantasporto Best Actor, and Valladolid International Film Festival Award for Best Actor. Such acclaim would come to define the body of Hurt's work, as he would become one of the most iconic British actors of the twentieth century in a career which spanned six decades. This copy SIGNED by Sir John Hurt on the title page, twice signed with his name ("John Hurt") and his character ("Winston Smith"). Housed in custom clamshell case (from TBCL); crafted in fine black cloth with maroon and olive cloth inserts on front, gilt-stamped black Nuba title-piece with same bi-color inset on spine panel, finished in smooth black velour on the interior. A truly remarkable copy of one of the most important works ever penned. Photographs available upon request..

Nineteen Eighty-Four

Orwell, George

London: Secker & Warburg, 1949 First edition, first printing. Publisher's light green cloth, top edge stained red; in the original red dust jacket designed by Michael Kennard (issued simultaneously in green, without any priority between them), lettered in white. About near fine, with ownership inscriptions to the front endpaper and half-title pages, front hinge cracked and secure at half-title page; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and minor chips to the extremities, some dampstaining to verso, spine a bit faded, but still red, front panel bright and unfaded. A very good or better copy, much better than usual for the red dust jacket, which is often found heavily faded. Fenwick A12.a Nineteen Eighty-Four is a novel about a dystopian future in the year 1984. In the future Orwell has created, the totalitarian government controls the civilian population with a detailed system of mental and physical control, including omnipresent two-way TV screens that keep the citizens under constant surveillance. Any criticism of the government is strictly illegal, and independent thought is persecuted as a "thoughtcrime." Even the newly adopted language, "newspeak," which abbreviates many phrases and eliminates words deemed inessential, served "not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view" of the new totalitarian regime, but also "to make all other modes of thought impossible. that is, a thought diverging from the [state approved] principlesshould literally be unthinkable, in so far as though is dependent on words." This first British edition was published five days before the first American edition.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Jacket design by Michael Kennard. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell. A nice example. Nineteen Eighty-Four: The Facsimile of the Extant Manuscript. Edited by Peter Davison. Preface by Daniel G. Siegel

ORWELL, GEORGE

Weston, MA: M & S Press, 1984. Privately Printed, Limited and Numbered Edition. Copy number 9 of fifty-five copies fully bound by Gray Parrot with a special design in royal blue and black Niger goat and housed in a one-quarter leather traycase. The printing and binding were completed in the fall of 1984. Folio,10 inches by 14 inches, i-xxvi + 381 pages comprising a facsimile of the original Nineteen Eighty-Four manuscript on each recto and the edited typescript draft on the facing verso. With gilt-stamping to the front board reading” War is Peace / Freedom is Slavery / Ignorance is Strength”. Beautiful as new condition. One of the only George Orwell manuscripts extant, published here in full facsimile, with transcript notes by poet, publisher, and Orwell historian Peter Davison. As Davison notes in his introduction: “This facsimile reproduces all that is known to have survived of the preliminary drafts of Nineteen Eighty-Four, that is about 44% of the published text of the novel.” Furthermore, he writes: “Despite all the rewriting revealed by this facsimile, it is remarkable how closely what has survived adheres to the main sweep of the narrative of Nineteen Eighty-Four. All the principle features, except the Appendix on Newspeak, are present, suggesting that the story had been pretty fully formed in Orwell’s mind by the time he sat down to write it out. What can now be seen for the first time is, in Sonia Orwell’s words, her husband’s ‘actual working methods’. These are a compelling demonstration of the way Orwell fashioned and refashioned his story, perfecting language and thought, in order to create one of the most remarkable novels of the twentieth century.” The preface by bookseller, rare book collector, and ABAA member Daniel Siegel details not only how the manuscript came to be his, but offers insight into the art and craft of literary serendipity and is a delight to read. He tells the story of his relationship with the Orwell manuscript, beginning with how, in late spring of 1969, Harold Graves of Scribner’s rare book department in New York introduced him to the piece, about which Siegel notes, “The leaves Harold showed me were nondescript, handwritten in ink or typed, with a great deal of overwriting on the typed pages. Much seemed illegible.” Siegel was obviously intrigued by the manuscript, but walked away without it. However, as kismet would have it, on the following day he telephoned Graves with the news that,“It’s a great manuscript and I don’t know why I shouldn’t have it.” And so, he did. Eventually, Siegel donated the Nineteen Eighty-Four manuscript to Brown University.

Nineteen Eighty-Four

George Orwell

Published by Secker & Warburg, London: 1949. 8vo. Condition: Good/Good This first edition of potentially one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century, introducing the popular concept of "Big Brother", is in Good condition. It has been hailed as "quite simply a novel which has changed the world" (Pringle, 100 Best Science Fiction Novels 1). Bound in original light green cloth boards, there is some general staining and slight bumping to the boards and spine, but the binding remains firm and in good condition. Inside, other than some slight toning and spotting to the edges, the pages are clean and bright and in very smart condition with no signs of damage. The book is housed in the preferred, rarer, red variant coloured dust jacket. This is also in Good condition, unclipped with the original price of 10s. net to the front inside flap. There is fading to the spine and some creasing and chipping to the edges and spine ends. The back panel has some general rubbing to it, but overall this jacket is in Good condition. This jacket is known for being particularly fragile, so it is rare to find it in as complete condition as this. Overall, this is a smart example of this important first edition by George Orwell. This book has had a profound effect on the world, introducing concepts that remain extremely relevant in the 21st century. A very collectible book and an important one for any true collector.

In 1969, President Richard Nixon nominated Burger to succeed Chief Justice Earl Warren. Initially he was not a strong intellectual force on the court, but sought to improve the administration of the federal judiciary. In 1974, Burger wrote for a unanimous court in United States v. Nixon, which rejected Nixon's invocation of executive privilege in the wake of the Watergate scandal. The ruling played a major role in Nixon's resignation. Burger joined the majority in Roe v. Wade in holding that the right to privacy prohibited states from banning abortions. He later abandoned Roe v. Wade in Thornburgh v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. His majority opinion in INS v. Chadha struck down the legislative veto. The Burger Court delivered numerous conservative decisions, it also delivered some liberal decisions regarding abortion, capital punishment, religious establishment, and school desegregation.
