Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. Vanessa Bell. Vanessa Bell. First Edition. Hardcover. Woolf, Virginia. A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN. Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1932, 8vo., 172pp. Publisher's original blue boards, titles to spine gilt. A near fine fresh copy [neat contemporary name on the ffe.] in the blue printed dustwrapper of the First Canadian Edition, first printing. The most elusive of the First Editions having been printed in the US [possibly from Harcourt Brace supplied sheets] in an unknown but very small edition, [250 - 500 copies, a speculation]. A very nice example for the completist, the DJ has one repaired closed tear but is otherwise very bright & interesting in its yellowish tonal quality. Woolf's major polemic against patriarchy, based loosely on two lectures she delivered, one at Newnham and the other at Girton. Kirkpatrick and Clarke A12dd. Woolf observed in her diary, "I shall be attacked for a feminist". An increasingly uncommon &… Read More

New York and London: Fountain press/Hogarth Press, 1929. Original red cloth, gilt title, (9.75 x 6 inches), 159 pages, plus numbered colophon. Signed limited first edition, number 261 of 492 copies signed by Woolf in her characteristic purple ink on the half title page, of which only 450 were for sale. Printed in U.S. by Robert Josephy and published on October 21, 1929, this edition preceded the English edition, both signed and trade, by three days (Kirkpatrick A12. Woolmer 215A). Exterior is in exceptionally fine condition, cloth is clean, and bright, the corners tight; internally, there is a closed tear along edge on page 65 (presumely from hastily opening the uncut page), binding is tight, overall a desirable copy of this classic feminist text.. Signed. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. Tall Octavo.

New York/London: The Fountain Press/The Hogarth Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Spine is mildly sunned; gilt strong. Near Fine. This edition preceded the English edition (both trade and signed) by three days. Original cinnamon cloth. One of only 492 copies SIGNED by the author (this copy marked "out of series" instead of numbered and belonged to the Yale University Press printer Carl Rollins) of this important and desirable title, a compelling essay on women and writing that has become a classic feminist text. "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction," said Woolf, "and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved."

London: The Hogarth Press, 1929. FIRST EDITION with Dust Jacket. Original cinnamon cloth, gilt on the spine quite bright & unrubbed, in the rare original dust jacket. This has had archival restoration at the top & bottom of the spine and at the corners. Hardly perceptible. Previous owner's signature on front free end page and light discoloring to same else EXCELLENT condition in VERY GOOD dust jacket. Woolf's seminal essay on women and writing has become a classic feminist text: Woolf's "aim was to establish a woman's tradition, recognizable by its circumstances, subject-matter, and its distinct problems. A Room of One's Own charted this vast territory with an air of innocent discovery which itself sharpens the case against induced ineffectiveness and ignorance that for so long clouded the counter-history of women" "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction," said Woolf, "and that, as you will see, leaves the… Read More

London: The Hogarth Press, 1929. [Essays] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (18 x 12cm), pp.172. Cinnamon cloth, titled in gilt to spine. Decorative bookplate and ownership signature of Eve Fleming. Offset toning to endpapers, light handling; a near fine copy without the jacket. One of the most famous works of Ms. Woolf; an exceptional example of the landmark feminist essay that examines the careers of several female authors including Jane Austen, The Brontes and George Eliot. Evelyn Beatrice Sainte Croix Fleming (1885-1964), wife of Valentine Fleming, MP. Eve ('Mrs. Val'), was an English socialite known for her flamboyant beauty and being the mother of James Bond writer Ian Fleming. Eve Fleming's nickname from her son Ian was M, and Ian may have used his relationship with her as a model for M, the fictional head of the British Secret Service (and James Bond's boos) in his popular adventure novels. Later part of Jon Gilbert's bibliographical archive of Ian Fleming, with his pencilled ownership signature.
