Chipped to the edges and browned to the spine as usual. Unclipped, priced at 10s.6d.net. LACKS FRONT FREE-END-PAPER. "Revised Edition" hand stamped to the title-page indicating this is one of a handful of copies printed for Waugh's own use between the 50 privately circulated copies of 1944 and the 1st edition pub. in May 1945. Tom Driberg received a letter from Waugh on August 11th 1945 explaining the "Revised Edition" included changes to the text and 28 spelling corrections. Description:
Little Brown & Company, Boston, 1945. 1st edition. hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. "The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece - a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire. Through the story of Charles Ryder's entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities. At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, 'Brideshead Revisited' transcends Waugh's early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity." [Pub. Info] Subtiltled "The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder." This is the first "Roman Catholic" novel by the author. There is a protective mylar cover. 1ST EDITION.
