Consists of a yellow colophon page and facing that, fitted into silk corner mounts, a duotone image of a lantern overlaid with one of the most frequently quoted passages by Celie from *The Color Purple*. Designed by William Plumley, with a tissue guard in between. The colophon reveals that 99 copies were supposed to have been prepared, but only 49 numbered copies and one proof were eventually made, this example being the sole proof copy. The bottom of the image is Signed by Alice Walker in gold ink, and is numbered in white album ink ("proof") by Plumley. A handsome production. Rare. *OCLC* locates three copies.

One of 49 copies Signed by Alice Walker in gold ink and numbered in white over a Parchment Gallery Graphics blindstamp. The colophon states: "Originally intended for an edition of 99 pieces (as stated on the [printed] image) only 49 copies and one Printer's Proof were issued for commercial purposes." An attractive publication, published in a remarkably small limitation. *OCLC* locates three copies (UC Berkeley, Delaware, Georgia).

The dust wrapper, illustrated by Cathie Felstead, has some curling at the top edge and some very minor handling marks. It has not been price clipped, showing the original £9.95 net price. The boards are free from previous owners marks and tight at the hinges. The text blocks are bright and white throughout and carry a very minor bump. There is a previous owners signature to the front fly, marked out with a black marker. This is a near fine copy of the first hardback edition. An epistolary novel which won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction. It was later adapted into a film and musical of the same name.
