Description:
London: George Allen and Unwin. 1942. First Edition; Third Printing. Hardcover. The book is bound in the publisher's original green cloth covers with black titles and decoration in a facsimile jacket. Presenting very well this is a nice clean copy with minimal signs of age or wear. A few light fox marks, very good. To go into great detail: the corners have softened just a touch and the spine tips have a couple of very tiny bumps and some soiling. Internally the book is again superb, all original with no restoration. Owner ink stamp to the second page. The book sits nice and square with some mild foxing to the first few leaves and occasionally through the book generally consistent with a book of this age. A little foxing to text block. Overall a real beauty. The first printing of The Hobbit was issued on 21st September 1937 with a print run of only 1500 copies. The book was an immediate success and sold out within months. This second impression was printed in December the same year in… Read More

Description:
The first and only edition of "The Hobbit" for the blind in Russian translation. The first translation and the first separate edition in Russian was published in 1976. The Braille edition is made from this Russian translation. The circulation is 300 copies. It is very rare, it is absent even in the Russian State Library for the Blind, especially in other libraries of Russia and the world.
The first Russian edition in Braille was created in 1885. Anna Alexandrovna Adler (1856-1924) for the first time in Russia began publishing books for the blind according to the system of L. Braille, having founded at her own expense in the village of Troitskoye, near Podolsk, a printing house of relief-dot font. On her initiative, the first public reading room for blind readers was opened in the Rumyantsev Museum in Moscow (now the Russian State Library) and the collection of Braille books was launched, which was subsequently transferred to the Library for the Blind. Since 1898, the first Braille magazine in Russia… Read More

Description:
Stockholm: Kooperativa Förbundets, 1947. [Children's Fantasy] FIRST SWEDISH EDITION, being the first foreign language edition. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.269; [1] blank. With illustrations by Tarbjörn. Publisher's cloth-backed illustrated boards, endpaper maps. A few small marks to page edges, one or two short tears within (printed on thin paper), light wear only to covers, spine a little sunned. An attractive copy. The controversial first translation of this work into any language, and also the first translation of any of the author's writing. Upon publication, Tolkien took great umbrage at Förbundets failure to use the book's correct title and their disrespectful butchering of the text. As a result, this edition was suppressed and replaced by an approved translation entitled 'Bilbo' (Hallqvist, 1962).

Description:
The first publication of Tolkien in Russian, not known in bibliographies and studies devoted to his work. On pages 30-40, there is a fragment from "The Hobbit" (the first edition in Russian was published in 1976). The name of the translator of the first fragment from Tolkien remains unknown.
The magazine "England" was one of the strange periodicals, the very existence of which (like the magazine "America") in the USSR was paradoxical during the "cold war". Nevertheless, it was published by the British government and distributed in the Soviet Union in accordance with the terms of the agreement between the governments of Great Britain and the USSR from 1962 to 1993. In each issue, the final part of the magazine featured a schedule of "BBC Broadcasts in Russian" on the radio. In "England" the articles from the field of culture, politics, economics, science and works of art by English writers were published, the magazine also told about ordinary Englishmen.
