1957. First Edition . SEUSS, Dr. The Cat in the Hat. New York: Random House, 1957. Octavo, original pictorial paper boards, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. $13,000.First edition of this rare and important children's classic, in the scarce original dust jacket.""A turning point, not only in the career of Dr. Seuss but in the reading habits of American children, occurred in the late 1950's. Inspired by a thoughtful article by John Hersey in Life magazine, entitled 'Why do Students Bog Down on the First R?,' Seuss began to address the problem, which has since entered the popular parlance as the why-Johnny-can't-read syndrome. Hersey's contention was that the schools were filled with 'pallid primers' such as Fun with Dick and Jane, featuring 'abnormally courteous, unnaturally clean boys and girls,' that real children found them uninspiring, and that many bookstores displayed more attractive…

"This extraordinary writer has done more to foster literacy in children than most because he manages to combine lunacy with sanity, fun with learning, and quality with exuberant readability" (Joseph Connolly). It was the basis for the 2003 film starring Mike Myers in the title role of the Cat in the Hat, and Dakota Fanning as Sally.

Description:
New York: Random House, 1957. Near fine in very good plus jacket.. First edition, first state of this subversive update to DICK AND JANE, based upon the idea that kids would get more excited about reading if they enjoyed the material. Challenged to create a reader for young children using only 220 different words, Seuss tricked kids into enjoying learning with his destructive and charismatic house guest. Inspired in part by Krazy Kat and Felix the Cat, but with a wily mind all his own, the Cat in the Hat's humor and naughtiness are engaged in the noble cause of literacy. "Parents," notes biographer Brian Jay Jones, "were more than happy to join Dr. Seuss as fellow revolutionaries. Even if parents didn't necessarily understand the pedagogy, it was easy to see the difference between the staid DICK AND JANE and the rambunctious CAT IN THE HAT: kids wanted to read about the antics of the cat, just as Geisel had hoped." The first book featuring the US literary icon, this copy comes directly from the…

New York: Random House, 1957. Book. Illus. by Dr. Seuss. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Random House, 1957, New York. Hardback. First Edition/Second Printing. Very Good/Good. The book is the second printing of the first edition with all the correct points including the lack of a price on the jacket, which is correct for the second printing. The spine is straight and tight, the boards are firm and sound with minor wear on the edges and the mostly pointed tips. The inside of the book is "as new" without a crayon or any other mark or tear and very clean. The dust jacket has a 3" by 2" tear out at the top cover removing the "T" from the "The" and a bit of the top of the hat (see picture). There is a small tear out at the foot of the spine. Otherwise the jacket has some soiling, faded pen marks, tiny creasing and rub wear. Looks sharp in it's new removable archival mylar..
