Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1934]., 1934. First edition. First U.S. edition. Fine tight copy in dust jacket with light restoration to the spine ends, corners, and extremities. A classic of the genre as Lord Peter Wimsey tries to solve the murder of an unknown corpse in a quiet country churchyard. "Through it all, grave and gay, goes the pealing of the bells and the great voice of "Tailor Paul" tolling out the nine "tailors," the nine teller-strokes that ring for the death of a man." The author's was praised for her ability to translate the technical descriptions of the bell ringing into a life-like picture of the inexperienced ringer making awful faces as he mouthed and mumbled his way through the peal. A sharp copy.

Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1934. Hardcover. Good. First American edition. Boards soiled, spine-tanned, dampstain in margin of a few pages, a good copy without dustwrapper. With the bookplate of the important rocket scientist and influential science-fiction fan John Drury Clark. In addition to writing an important book on rocket propulsion, as well as a couple of stories in "Astounding Stories", Clark was also instrumental in revitalizing and promoting the career of Robert E. Howard. He was college roommates with L. Sprague de Camp, who he encouraged to write science fiction stories, introduced de Camp to his sometime co-writer Fletcher Pratt, and eventually married Pratt's widow Inga. His previous marriage prompted Pratt to form a club of science fiction writers and scientists called The Trap Door Spiders, so that they wouldn't have to socialize with Clark's first wife. Isaac Asimov later fictionalized the club as a group of mystery solvers, The Black Widowers.

Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1944]., 1944. First edition. Later U. S. edition. Originally published in 1934. A Wartime book. Offsetting to front and rear endpapers, else a near fine, clean, tight copy in dust jacket lightly sunned on the spine, lightly soiled on the white rear cover, and light wear to the spine ends. One of the best of the Lord Peter Wimsey mystery stories in which he must find an illusive murderer. The ancient church and bells of the Fenchurch St. Paul play the leading part, and the book is steeped in the atmosphere of that strange, flat fen-country of East Anglia, fitting for a tale that begins with an unknown corpse in a quiet country churchyard.
