Description:
London: Jonathan Cape. 1982. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Signed by Roald Dahl and also signed with a full page original drawing by Quentin Blake. Publisher's original grey cloth boards with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping at the spine tips and corners, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The contents, with the unavoidable toning of the text block due to the quality of the paper, are otherwise clean throughout and without foxing or previous owner's marks. Complete with the very near fine lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper which has a touch of fading to the spine. Not price-clipped (£6.50 net to the lower front flap). Housed in a bespoke quarter black morocco solander case with titles in gilt to the spine. Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front endpaper "To William / with love / Roald Dahl", overleaf on the half title the illustrator has… Read More

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1982. First edition of this Dahl classic, which has sold over 20 million copies. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front pastedown, "Nicola Love Roald Dahl." Additionally inscribed by the illustrator Quentin Blake opposite Dahl's inscription. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Uncommon signed by both Dahl and Blake. Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of the twentieth century. Dahl's ability to twist words into a clever and creative new language is fascinating to children, and is evident in BFG. The gruesome descriptions of the horrid giants and the subtle allusions to other stories will entertain children young and old. An animated adaptation was released in theatres in 1987 with David Jason providing the voice of the BFG and Amanda Root as the voice of Sophie. It was also the basis for the 2016 film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison… Read More

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1982. Uncorrected proof copy with provisional publication details on front wrapper. Dahl's fantastical tale was expanded from a short story found in his 1975 book Danny, the Champion of the World, and was described in the first edition dust jacket blurb as "Dahl's most startling and wonderful tale since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". A film adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, was released in 2016. Jeremy Treglown assesses Dahl's legacy in his biography and notes that not all of the author's books will last, but concludes "the best - especially The BFG - surely will" (p. 9). Octavo. Original orange wrappers, lettering in black, publisher's device repeated in black. Black and white illustrations within the text, all by Quentin Blake. Jeremy Treglown, Roald Dahl, 1994.

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1982. First edition, first printing. Published by Jonathan Cape in 1982. This is a very good (or better) copy. The dust wrapper is slightly worn throughout, with surface scratching, bumping at the corners and spine tips. It has not been price clipped, though the front flap is creased. The boards are free from notable wear, though the spine tips are typically bumped. There is a small previous owners label to the front fly, named 'Caroline King'. The internals, aside from this, are free from previous owners ink and inscriptions. The text blocks are not foxed though so slightly toned. Overall, this is a very good (or better) copy. It is an expansion of a short story from Dahl's 1975 book Danny, the Champion of the World. The book is dedicated to Dahl's late daughter, Olivia, who died of measles encephalitis at the age of seven in 1962.
