London: Cape, 1988. First edition, first printing. Published by Cape in London, 1988. This is a fine copy. The signature of Blake flat-signed to the front endpaper shows above that of Dahl's to a personal bookplate beneath. Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1988. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. 10" by 6". None. A fine, first edition copy of Roald Dahl's famous children's novel 'Matilda'. A fantastic copy of this award winning novel. 'Matilda' won the Children's Book Award in the year of its publication. 'Matilda' is one of Dahl's best-known works. The titular character is a fantastic, extremely literate child who lives in a home where her parents do not appreciate her. She is a child prodigy, who discovers that she has an extraordinary psychic power which she uses to save her school and teacher, Miss Honey. Dahl published this book following his success with other titles such as 'The BFG' and 'The Witches'. It was later adapted into the 1996 film starring Danny DeVito, and the RSC's successful stage musical. A fine example of this important work. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, excellent, with light bumping to the head and tail of spine. A few light marks to the head of… Read More

London: Jonathan Cape, 1988. [Children's Literature] FIRST EDITION, First Impression. Octavo (24 x 16cm), pp.240. With in-text illustrations by Blake throughout. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spine. With the colour-illustrated jacket, also by Blake, priced at £8.50. Contents clean, no inscriptions. Jacket has a few very faint marks/spots to flaps else a crisp, fine copy. Lovingly and hilariously illustrated by Dahl's long term collaborator, Quentin Blake. A children's classic, Matilda tells the story of a highly intelligent girl repressed by both her family and the educational system, and whose frustration manifests itself as telekinesis. Featuring some of Dahl's most memorable creations, such as the bullying headmistress Miss Trunchbull and the put upon but fundamentally good Miss Honey, the novel remains one of the best-known pieces of children's literature of the past century. In 2010 it was adapted into an award-winning stage musical of the same name. "Even before she is five years… Read More

Description:
(New York): Viking Kestrel, 1988. Fine in fine jacket.. Lovely first US edition of Dahl's novel, still beloved by contemporary children and nostalgic adults alike. A model for child prodigies, a wistful dream for harried schoolteachers, a perfect librarian's pet and the avenging angel of the elementary grades - Matilda Wormwood is an icon. Like all of Dahl's books, MATILDA pops at the seams with fury and spite, and like his best books, it is furious and spiteful about the right things: hateful parents, abuse of authority, all the petty cruelties and humiliations of childhood. It is an explicitly pro-book-reading text, and what it is for goes hand in hand with what it is against: repression, injustice, and television, television, television. Despite all that rage, on the page and essentially inseparable from the page, the inscrutable operations of Nemesis posthumously rewarded the famously adaptation-hating author with not one but two highly successful adaptations of his last great work for those who… Read More

A lovely near fine square copy with just the merest hint of foxing (hardly worth mentioning) to the top edge and with a miniscule bump to the bottom left-hand corner of the back board. No inscriptions. Clean pages. Looks to be unread as there is still resistance to the boards when the book is opened. Complete with the near fine (or better) dustwrapper (priced £8.50 net to the inside flap) with absolutely no fading whatsoever to the red spine lettering. No chips, tears, wear or pieces missing to the dustwrapper. A very nice copy indeed. Illustrations by Quentin Blake.
