The husband and wife team Margret and Hans Augusto Rey, German-born Jews, fled Paris in June 1940 with the manuscript for the first Curious George book (published in 1941) in their luggage. The titular character first appeared in Rey's 1939 Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys. Small quarto. Original yellow cloth, spine and front cover lettered in red, pictorial endpapers. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout in colour. Faint mark at foot of rear board, else bright; jacket spine panel faded with tiny puncture, scattered marks, edges nicked, original price of $3.25 to head of front flap, lower corner clipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

Tight and Near Fine in a crisp, VG+ example of the original, completely unrestored dustjacket, with very light creasing along the panel edges and just a touch of very faint chipping at the spine ends. Octavo, wonderfully illustrated in rich color by H.A. Rey himself.

Some minor wear to the pages and some tape residue to the inside front and back covers. Despite this, a nice copy. The jacket has been price clipped, and also clipped to the bottom of the front flap. There is a library label affixed to the base of the spine. The jacket is bright and uncreased, some minor rubbing to the back.
