Description:
Mexico: Compania Editorial Continental S.A., 1955. Softcover. Fine. First Mexican edition. Pages a bit browned, else fine in fine self-wrappers. The author's first book. Humphrey Bogart financed and starred in the hard-hitting film noir adaptation by Nicholas Ray, in which he played an attorney trying to keep a young, embittered criminal (played by John Derek in his debut) from the electric chair. Dooley Wilson (Sam of *Casablanca*) also had a small role as a piano player, his only re-teaming with Bogart. At his death the Chicago-born Motley, whose fiction was often race-blind, was considered one of the leading African-American novelists of his time.
