Description:
New York, Grove Press, 1961. . First American edition, number 91 of 100 specially bound hors commerce copies signed by the author; 8vo (204 x 132 mm.); internally fine, free of ownership markings or similar; publisher's cloth-backed marbled boards, lettered in gilt to spine, minor rubbing to corners but overall a superior example. andy21 A fine copy of the rare, specially bound, first American edition of Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller, one of 100 copies signed by the author on the limitation page. Originally published in Paris by the Obelisk Press in 1934, Tropic of Cancer was immediately banned in America and shortly after in Britain and Canada for its candid sexuality which offended many. Upon its American publication in 1961 with this edition by the Grove Press, the work was tested via numerous obscenity trials in over twenty-one States, the majority holding that the work was not obscene, though notable dissenting voices included Pennsylvanian Supreme Court Justice Musmanno, who stated that… Read More

Description:
New York: Grove Press, Inc.,, 1961. First US edition, first printing, of this seminal event in 20th-century publishing. Written in the slums of a foreign city by a man who was an utter literary failure in his homeland, Tropic of Cancer was first published in 1934 by a pornographer in Paris. Banned in the US, this first and much later US edition triggered censorship battles, and it wasn't until 1964 that the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the book was not pornographic. The stateside publication of Tropic of Cancer made Miller famous in the US, and a steady stream of fans began to visit and write to him at his home in Big Sur. In an attempt to flee the constant attention, Miller moved to Pacific Palisades in 1962 where he lived for the remainder of his life. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth-backed patterned blue boards, spine and front board lettered in silver, top edge blue. With dust jacket. A fine copy in near-fine jacket, a hint of wear to corners but without loss, not… Read More

Description:
Paris: The Obelisk Press, 1934. First Edition. Original prospectus for Miller's first novel, which recounted his experiences during his first year in Paris as a struggling writer living on the fringe. "The text for this prospectus was written mostly, if not entirely, by Miller. In the body of the text is a 48 word excerpt from Nin's Preface, which itself is now known to have been written in large part by Miller" (Shifreen & Jackson A8a, pp.3-4). Published in September, 1934; a second edition of the prospectus was issued in 1935, in a smaller format on white paper and lacking the illustration by Kahane, with text printed on recto only. A rare and important Miller 'A' item. Provenance: one of a handful of copies found among the effects of the estate of Karl Karsten, a personal friend of Miller's during the teens-1930's. Broadside (7 7/8" x 6 1/4") printed in black on orange stock; titling and illustration by Maurice J. Kahane on recto; verso printed English and French text in two columns. Faint… Read More

Description:
New York: Grove Press, 1961. First authorized and first trade edition issued in America. With a long introduction by Karl Shapiro and a preface by Anais Nin. 8vo., publisher's original cloth backed boards in dustjacket. xxxiii, 318 pp. A handsome, clean and pleasing copy, some light evidence of age or shelving to the dustjacket, the book very fine. FIRST AUTHORIZED AND FIRST TRADE EDITION ISSUED IN AMERICA. Of the book, John Ciardi said, [it] "is a substantial work of art. The violence of Miller's attack on orthodoxy and falseness is indispensable to his human vision of things. In [the book] the test is ferocity, a ferocious and yet naive sincerity that castigates all sham. It cannot fail to be moral finally, because the ferocity is radically moral. And because the author is an artist--a very good one, as the continued 'underground life' of the book attests." Ours is a very nice copy of this classic.

New York; (1961): Grove Press. First Edition. Octavo. First printing of the Grove Press edition with an introduction by Karl Shapiro and preface by Anais Nin. This is considered by many to be a modern American classic though published first in Paris in 1934. It took another 27 years for Miller's most important and, in the opinion of some, best work to be published in his own country. Bound in 1/2 black cloth over blue and black marbled paper covers boards stamped in silver, spine lettering silver, two corners bumped, in unclipped blue dust jacket lettered in black over white and repeated on spine, top edge stained black, light wear to spine ends, edges and rear panel rubbed, a couple of small closed edge tears. A very good copy.
