Description:
New York: David Mckay, 1974. First edition of Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth, maps by Don Pitcher. Boldly signed by Michael Shaara on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Rare and desirable signed. Stephen Crane once said that he wrote The Red Badge of Courage because reading the cold history was not enough; he wanted to know what it was like to be there, what the weather was like, what men's faces looked like. In order to live it he had to write it. This book was written for much the same reason" (Shaara). The Killer Angels reveals more about the Battle of Gettysburg than any piece of learned nonfiction on the same subject. James McPherson wrote, "This is my favorite historical novel . . . a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant." "A book that changed my life... I had never visited… Read More

Description:
New York: David McKay. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. FIRST EDITION of Michael Shaara's Pulitzer-prize winning novel about the battle of Gettysburg. "Reflecting on an extraordinary experience with his family visiting the battlefield at Gettysburg, Michael became obsessed with telling the story of that momentous event through the eyes of the main characters themselves, something that had never been done. After seven years, the manuscript for The Killer Angels was completed... To Michael's disappointment, The Killer Angels was rejected by the first fifteen publishers who saw the manuscript. Finally, in 1973, it was bought by the small independent publisher, The David McKay Company, who was subsequently bought by Random House... [The] novel received very little attention, and mixed reviews, thus it was a shock to both Michael and the literary community when the announcement was made that The Killer Angels had been awarded the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction" (Jeff Shaara). Description:
New York: David McKay Company, Inc., 1974. First edition, first printing. Here is a jacketed first edition, first printing, of Michael Shaara's celebrated Civil War novel.  Michael Shaara (1929-1988) began his career as a writer of short stories, primarily science fiction.  As a prolific short story writer he enjoyed a certain amount of success, winning several awards and having two of his stories produced as television dramas in the late 50s. In the early 60s he began to work on more ambitious projects. His first novel, The Broken Place (1968), was about a soldier who returns from the Korean War and becomes a prizefighter. Though critically praised for its style, The Broken Place was a commercial failure, which sadly set the pattern for Shaara's three novels published in his lifetime.  The Killer Angels followed, the manuscript taking Shaara seven years to complete. Rejected by the first fifteen publishers that saw it, when finally published, The Killer Angels saw little… Read More

Description:
New York: David McKay Company, Inc, 1974. Near fine in near-fine jacket. First printing, review copy with publisher's slip laid in, of the surprise Pulitzer Prize-winning historical novel recreating the Battle of Gettysburg. Drawing heavily from journal entries and letters to write convincingly from the perspective of major players in the famous Civil War battle, KILLER ANGELS achieved that rare, delicate balance of dramatic storytelling and factual reporting. It brought two of its most sympathetic characters, James Longstreet and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, into renewed popular awareness, but is also known for its compelling depiction of the everyday lives of soldiers. The book has had an immense influence on modern pop culture, particularly through the other creators it inspired: from Ken Burns in his famous documentary series on the Civil War to Joss Whedon in his science-fiction western television series FIREFLY. 8'' x 5.25''. Original blue paper boards patterned to look like quarter cloth,… Read More
