Duodecimo, 160 pages, black cloth, paper label on spine: Note: this copy was preserved in a well-meant, contemporary thick plastic protective cover with the black cloth edging, which had some edging stickiness, resulting in some damage including a fingernail-sized paper chip to the rear free endpaper, the rear flap must have been used as a place marker, and left a light brown vertical mark on page 95. Ex libris John Kobler, probably the author of AL CAPONE, and a collector of James Joyce, Cocteau, D. H. Lawrence and C.S. Lewis. An Advance Review Copy, with review slip laid in. This has the original cream dust jacket mentioning Lewis's THE PROBLEM OF PAIN on the top panel ( this was subsequently replace with four blurbs, in red ink, for SCREWTAPE ). First US Edition/First Printing with no mention of subsequent printings and the $1.50 price present on the front flap; A Near Fine book in a Very Good dust jacket. An outstanding copy of this famed epistolary novel by perhaps the greatest apologetic writer of all time; Lewis being the author of numerous apologetic works including "Mere Christianity", and also classic fiction including "The Chronicles of Narnia" series. This book very scarce in the first printing and in collectible condition. This copy is in near fine condition with a square tight binding, bright black lettering over clean red boards, and clean white pages throughout; the book does show light shelf wear to the spine ends, very mild discoloration to the board edges, and a previous owner's embossed ex-libris to the front free paper, else fine. Housed in a clean and crisp, original, very good or better dust jacket that shows a light overall age-toning, mild chipping and rubbing to the spine ends and edges, and a couple of larger chips… Read more

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1943. Hardcover. First Edition, First Printing of the North American Edition, published the year after Geoffrey Bles and with all requisite criteria as called for by Brown in his `In Pursuit of C.S. Lewis: Adventures in Collecting His Works.` 8vo. 160pp. Publisher`s dark maroon cloth. VERY GOOD in Very Good dust jacket protected in a removable mylar cover. Londdon: Geoffrey Bles, 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. First edition. Brown 18. Hooper A.9.This was Lewis' breakthrough book - the book that changed him from unknown to famous (along with his radio broadcasts.) The book contains letters of advice from a senior demon to a trainee, teaching him how to tempt people to sin. Lewis did no research for the book. The ideas came entirely from self-examination.Black cloth boards with a label on the spine which contains author and title. 160 pp.At the very extremities of the black cloth a bit of white wear is showing. On the first page an owner's name in ink - there apparently has been an attempt to erase it. The final leaf is wrinkled, likely from the publisher. The book is VG. Lacking dust wrapper.Full refund if not satisfied. Shelley and Son Books specializes in C.S.Lewis, J.R.R.Tolkien & the Inklings.

Top edge gilt with new marbled end-papers. Very light toning and the occasional spotting to the text block. Free from inscriptions. The original book spine with the paper title label has been pasted to one of the rear end-papers. The Screwtape Letters is a Christian apologetic novel by C. S. Lewis which is written in a satirical, epistolary style and while it is fictional in format, the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptation and resistance to it. The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior Demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, a Junior Tempter. The uncle's mentorship pertains to the nephew's responsibility in securing the damnation of a British man known only as 'the Patient'. A very attractive rebinding and scarce with such… Read more

London: Geoffrey Bles, 1942. 1st (2nd printing). h/b. Near fine, 1st edition (2nd printing one month later), missing d/j, black boards, titling on spine plate a little soiled; text block firm, unmarked pages tight and crisp.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). A milestone in the history of popular theology, ÔThe Screwtape LettersÕ is an iconic classic on spiritual warfare and the power of the devil. This profound and striking narrative takes the form of a series of letters from Screwtape, a devil high in the Infernal Civil Service, to his nephew Wormwood, a junior colleague engaged in his first mission on earth trying to secure the damnation of a young man who has just become a Christian. Although the young man initially looks to be a willing victim, he changes his ways and is ÔlostÕ to the young devil. Dedicated to LewisÕs friend and colleague J.R.R. Tolkien, ÔThe Screwtape LettersÕ is a timeless classic on spiritual conflict and the invisible realities which are part of our religious experience.
