London: The Bodley Head, 1956. Hardcover. 566p., good first UK edition; faint stain to top edge, ownership signature on fep as well as a bookseller's fiche, in black cloth boards and a slightly edgeworn, unclipped dust jacket. The casebinding is sound and square, its cloth and gilt quite bright, the dj's top margin slightly edgeworn. A good to very good copy. African American novelist's first book, set in Georgia. Ad for Bud Schulberg's "Waterfront" on rear panel. FYI, this British production is a better-designed book (titling font, layout) than the American.

Description:
London: The Bodley Head, 1956. Hardcover. 566p., first UK edition in cloth boards with a handling-dimmed spine panel and a slightly edgeworn dj; also, dj verso shows foxing. FYI, we've recently handled two exemplars of this British-designed casebinding; one had spine title in gilt and the other in pigment. This a pigment-struck example, don't know precedence. African American novelist's first book, set in Georgia. Ad for Bud Schulberg's "Waterfront" on rear panel.
