Description:
New York: The Viking Press, 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Kerouac, Jack. ON THE ROAD. Signed. New York: Viking Press, 1957. 8vo., 310pp. A very good or better copy, the white spine lettering partially rubbed, evidence of a bookplate having been removed from the front free endpaper otherwise the book block is clean & free of blemish. Kerouac has signed in black ink at the top of the second blank page which has likely been added later to this copy. Notwithstanding it is indeed signed & as such not to be toyed with as there are only a handful of really top-of-mind modern titles & right beside Catcher & Mockingbird sits OTR or is it the other way round? The dustwrapper is very good or better having been professionally restored with work done primarily at the spine heel & crown. An extremely good copy.

Description:
New York: Viking, 1957. First edition. Near fine in near fine jacket with just a touch of restoration.. First printing, a review copy, of Kerouac's landmark novel, and a defining work of the Beat Generation - in exceptional condition. Kerouac's novel of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty (literary stand-ins for the author and Neal Cassady) traveling across the United States was famously written in a drug-fueled mania on a long scroll of paper and became a surprise bestseller. It quickly went through multiple printings and made Kerouac not only a celebrity (famously appearing on the Steve Allen Show), but an unwilling spokesman for a movement. His style - both literary and personal - came to influence postwar youth culture, from rock-and-roll to Marlon Brando. One of the nicest copies of this classic we've handled, and the first review copy. A stunning example. 8" x 5.25" Original black cloth titled in white. In original unclipped ($3.95) color pictorial jacket designed by Bill English. 310 pages.… Read More

New York: The Viking Press, 1957. First edition of Kerouac's classic novel. Octavo, original black cloth. Near fine in a bright very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Bill English. With the original New York Times article for On the Road laid in. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A sharp example. The raucous, exuberant, often wildly funny account of a journey through America and Mexico, Jack Kerouac's On the Road instantly defined a generation on its publication in 1957: it was, in the words of a New York Times reviewer, "the clearest and most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as 'beat.'" Written in the mode of ecstatic improvisation that Allen Ginsberg described as "spontaneous bop prosody," Kerouac's novel remains electrifying in its thirst for experience and its defiant rebuke of American conformity. In his portrayal of the fervent relationship between the writer Sal Paradise and his outrageous,… Read More

Description:
New York: The Viking Press, 1957. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. A Near Fine copy with a small spot to the closed foredge of the text block, internally clean and unmarked. In a Very Good+ unrestored first issue jacket. Spine a bit faded, small chips and tears at the spine ends and extremities, otherwise an attractive example. Housed in a blue clamshell case. "It changed my life like it changed everyone else's," Bob Dylan said of On The Road. Jack Kerouac's classic Roman A Clef, published in 1957, was the defining work of the beat generation. It follows the travels of Sal Paradise, a stand in for Kerouac himself, and is based on a series of journeys Kerouac took from 1947 to 1950. The work was typed up on a continuous "scroll" of sheets that Kerouac had taped together. On The Road appears on both Modern Library's list of the 100 best novels of the century and on Time Magazine list of the 100 best English language novels from 1923-2005. "[I]ts publication is a historic occasion... the most… Read More

Description:
New York: The Viking Press, 1957 First edition, first printing. Original publisher's black cloth, with front board and spine lettered in white; in its original black dust jacket, designed by Bill English, lettered in white. About fine, with light offsetting to endpapers, very faint spotting to spine, a hint of rubbing to spine ends, and very clean pages with just a touch of soiling to p. 142; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light fading to spine, mild chipping to spine ends, light edgewear, a shallow chip to bottom left corner of rear panel, a couple of nicks and a light scratch to front panel, a light mark near foot of spine, and some faint staining to rear flap. Overall, an excellent copy of Kerouac's Beat classic. On the Road is Kerouac's second novel and certainly his most renowned. Before its release in 1957, sections of On the Road were published as articles in a variety of literary magazines and were received well by audiences, prompting the publishers to describe the first… Read More
