In April 1980 (six weeks before publication) The Louisiana University Press printed an additional 5,000 copies of "A Confederacy of Dunces" to supplement the already printed 2,500 copies. The 5,000 supplemented books state "second printing" on the copyright page. Production Manager Joanna V. Hill changed the dust jacket after the first printing by deleting the stars in the sky and intensifying the blue color in the letters of the title. The first and second printing books were released at the same time which is why they are both first issues. The second printing dust jacket is considered to be a first edition, first issue, second state.
