Although not dated, the inscription, in ink on the front free endpaper, is contemporary with the publication of the first edition when Hinton was a teenager. The Outsiders, now recognized as a young-adult classic was, remarkably, written by Hinton when she was still in high school. She later explained the origin of the story: "I was actually fifteen when I first began it. It was the year I was sixteen and a junior in high school that I did the majority of the work (that year I made a D in creative writing). A VG+ copy in a dustwrapper that is complete (including the publisher's price of £1.00/20s net to the inside flap) but has three closed tears (approx.1cm, 2cm and 3cm in length); the dustwrapper is also slightly frayed at the very tips (without loss though). N.B: basis for the 1983 cult coming-of-age movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola: The movie is noted for its cast of up-and-coming stars, including C Thomas Howell (who garnered a Young Artist Award), Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio and Diane Lane.
