Author's First Book which launched a great career as a mystery/detective writer who not only created both Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee as his main Native American detectives, but also used his fiction to teach readers about Native American culture, this copy is not only Signed by Hillerman, but it also carries original art Signed by Native American (Navajo) artist Ernest Franklin who depicts a shape-shifter or Navajo wolf, similar to a werewolf in Western culture, the gun and skull which are also depicted represent a sophisticated criminal enterprise undertaken on the Navajo reservation, Hieb bibliography A1a, with slipcase, only a handful of this title were so illustrated by Franklin, very scarce. Bookseller's tiny sticker on front free endpaper, fine in a very good jacket.

Housed in publisher's blue cloth slipcase with silver stamping. Only a handful of copies of this title were illustrated by Franklin in this manner.

Author's First Book which launched an amazing career, this copy Signed by Hillerman, it also includes an original Signed drawing by Native American artist Ernest Franklin which depicts a Navajo shaman/healer/singer creating a sand painting during a healing or curing ceremony for a fellow Indian, very scarce thus, according to text on the dust jacket, Hillerman went to school for his first eight grades as a day student at St. Mary's Academy, a boarding school for Indian girls, thereby, he says, learning how it felt to be a minority problem by being one, Hieb bibliography A1b, this may be the only British edition so illustrated by Franklin. A beautiful First Edition (U.K.) of Tony Hillerman's First Book, signed by Tony Hillerman, one of America's favorite authors. The book is Near Fine blue cloth with the very slightest touches of lightness on the spine ends, and two very faint marks on the page edges, all barely noticeable; otherwise very clean and bright. The Near Fine dustjacket is complete with original price intact and very light touches of soiling at the edges; the front and back panels are coated in light plastic so it is difficult to say if this has yellowed at all (it is cream-colored) but it has certainly protected the dustjacket from tears or scrapes; the interior of the dustjacket (next to the book) is pristine. One of the most desirable "First Books" by an American author, this is a beautiful copy in archival plastic cover by this revered writer who rarely signs any longer.

Overall, the book and purple dustwrapper show as "tight and clean" (especially in the mylar protector). Might be a printer's copy, because it has technical information on type-setting written on the ffep. in pencil. A very respectable copy at a "respectable" price.
