Description:
London: William Heinemann. 1935. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Publisher's original brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding firm and the cloth fresh and without fading. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The closed text block edge with minor spotting. Complete with the rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper which has been subtly professionally restored replacing pieces to the bottom of the spine and lower right corner of the front panel. Correctly priced 7/6 net to both the front and rear flaps. An attractive looking example of the author's scarcest and most desirable title to obtain in dustwrapper. The basis for the 1951 Academy Award winning John Huston directed film of the same name starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. The later American first printing was published without the last three chapters of the Heinemann edition. Further details and… Read More

Description:
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1935. Very good plus in near-fine jacket. First US edition of this classic WWI adventure story (with a dash of romance), following a skipper and missionary's housekeeper as they plot to destroy a German gunboat -- adapted into a Hollywood film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. Far from the tall ships of his celebrated Horatio Hornblower series, C. S. Forester opted for a 20th-century riverboat adventure in THE AFRICAN QUEEN. The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS called the novel "one of the best stories in many a day," noting that, despite the odds stacked against the struggling protagonist Rose, "never for a moment does the reader question her hopes of victory" (76). It was a role played to perfection by Katharine Hepburn in the 1951 film adaptation, and earned her an Academy Award nomination. THE AFRICAN QUEEN appears on numerous American Film Institute best-of lists, and Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart together top their list of greatest US screen legends. 8.25'' x… Read More
