London: Macmillan and Co, 1977. First edition. Hardback. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8" by 5". None. A first edition of this Mediaeval Whodunnit by Ellis Peters. "This intriguing novel stands out from those contemporary mysteries that find their strength in forensic detail, promiscuous sex and so on." Ellis Peters is a nom-de-plume for Edith Mary Pargeter. Pargeter wrote many works of history and historical fiction, however she is best known for her murder mysteries, particularly her medieval-detective series 'The Cadfael Chronicles'. (London): Macmillan London Limited, 1977. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/fine. First printing, octavo size, 192 pp. The first book in the "Brother Cadfael" series, the title character being a Benedictine monk living in Wales in the early 12th century, who "combines the curious mind of a scientist/pharmacist with a knight-errant". The series would eventually encompass twenty novels, and was adapted to the stage, radio and television, the latter bringing the series into prominence starring Sir Derek Jacobi. Written by the linguist and scholar Edith Mary Pargeter (1913-1995) under the pseudonym of Ellis Peters. Pargeter not only wrote multiple works of historical fiction (the Cadfael series, the "Brothers of Gwynedd" trilogy and more) but also authored history and Czech translations (n.b., info and above quote from Wiki). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full rust-coloured textured paper over boards, black lettering debossed on the spine, page 97 with a double line of text; octavo size (7 15/16" by…

Description:
London: Macmillan, 1977. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/fine. A very nice copy of the first Brother Cadfael novel. In this book Edith Pargeter combined her excellent historical novel abilities with her nom-de-plume Ellis Peters' well-constructed mysteries and started the boom in historical mysteries that continues to this day. There are many earlier examples of the form, but this is where it takes off and becomes a major publishing category. Historically important, well written, and a scarce book to find in nice condition. This copy has a previous owner's minuscule inscription on the front free endpaper (signature and date of 10 Dec 77, and the cryptic notation "F.E." indicating it was purchased through British bookseller Francis Edwards Ltd.), and very slight bumping to the spine, both head and tail, creasing the jacket slightly. The jacket is unclipped, and the book was not read more than once or twice. A nice copy of a cornerstone volume. Any photo attached to my listings are of the actual…
