Description:
USA: D. Appleton, 1920. A first edition, first printing published by D. Appleton and Company in 1920. First US Edition. First state of text with 'Forasmuch as it hath please Almighty God' on page 186. Some fading to spine, with partial fading to areas of boards. Tidemark to bottom right corner of front board, and at base of spine, which bleeds through very slightly into margins of final pages. Bookplate to front pastedown, else unmarked. Binding sturdy with hinges intact. Set in the elite society of 19th-century New York City, the novel explores the constraints of societal norms and the struggle between personal desire and social conformity. The story revolves around Newland Archer, a young lawyer, who becomes engaged to the conventional May Welland but falls in love with her unconventional cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska. Wharton's novel delves into themes of love, duty, and the rigid expectations of high society during the Gilded Age.
