Written in blue ink, it is inscribed "Dear Sir [...] It is a great encouragement to know that 'Renecca' appears to serious readers, beside the ordinary novel-reading public who read for excitement. Light toning and spotting to the text-block with some of the spotting encroaching onto the page edges in a few places. Some spotting and light toning to the end-papers and prelims. These famous opening lines later became one of the most famous opening words ever recorded in Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning 1940 film of the same name. Rebecca is certainly Du Maurier's most famous novel and one that many others after her attempted to imitate, as a resurgence of romantic mystery novels came soon after its publication. The Mystery Writers of America have named Rebecca among the top ten Mystery Novels of All Time.

Some very minor browning to the page edges, as is common with the cheap paper used in this book, and a couple of pages with a crease to the outer corner of the page, otherwise a very good copy finely bound in recent full black morocco, spine with five raised bands, the compartments lettered, ruled and decorated in gilt. Top edge gilt.

A little spotting to first and final leaves, contents clean, exterior as new. A pleasing copy in an attractive recent leather binding. The classic gothic mystery which was the source for Hitchcock's haunting film. Part of Queen's Quorum, and a Haycraft-Queen cornerstone mystery.
