Description:
LONDON: Gollancz, 1938. First edition, first printing. Published by Gollancz in London, 1938. A very good book with a small name and date to the front endpaper. Some fading to the gilt titles. Spotting to the page edges and top edge. Some rubbing to the corners and edges. In a very good dust wrapper, which has a minute chip to the head of the spine. The spine is browned (as is usual). Some light loss to corners. A very nice example of the wrapper indeed. The ALS, written in Du Maurier's hand is on 'Greyfriars, Church Crookham, Fleet, Hants.' headed and watermarked paper. Written in blue ink, it is inscribed "Dear Sir [...] It is a great encouragement to know that 'Renecca' appears to serious readers, beside the ordinary novel-reading public who read for excitement. Thank you indeed for writing. Yours sincerely, Daphne du Maurier". It is a stunning signature, with her hand bold and fluid throughout. The ink intensifies on the rear side, presumably due to her running out… Read More

Description:
London: Victor Gollancz Limited, 1938. Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me". These famous opening lines later became one of the most famous opening words ever recorded in Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning 1940 film of the same name. Rebecca is certainly Du Maurier's most famous novel and one that many others after her attempted to imitate, as a resurgence of romantic mystery novels came soon after its publication. The Mystery Writers of America have named Rebecca among the top ten Mystery Novels of All Time.

(in a new FACSIMILE dust jacket) [nice clean copy with no significant wear, foil wrap-around band exceptionally bright and unblemished, one-time owner's embossed library stamp on front endpaper (see notes)]. "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again" -- hard to beat that as an opener. Classic romantic thriller (you might say), and the basis for a pretty good movie, too. This copy is from the library of noted Hollywood writer-producer Carey Wilson -- whose studio (M-G-M) did NOT make the film. NOTE again that this is a FACSIMILE dust jacket, and while it protects the book and enhances its shelf appearance, it has NOT been factored into our pricing. .
