A very collectible copy of Du Maurier's most famous novel, which was successfully adapted for film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940, and went on to win an Oscar. Rebecca was A National Book Award winner in 1938, voted the UK's favorite book of the last 225 years in 2017 (beating out To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, among other notable titles).

Publisher's black cloth with a pink label to the spine (with the title and author). The boards are exceptionally bright and clean. The top edge is a trifle dusty and there are a small handful of foxing spots to the fore-edge. There are no previous owner inscriptions. In the VERY RARE dustwrapper with the all-important price of 5/- to the inside flap. This is the cloth edition that was originally offered for sale at 5/- (there was also a paperback edition sold at the reduced price of 3/6). Bound in publisher's original black cloth stamped in gilt; lacking the dust jacket. Near Fine with light lean to spine, light fading to spine cloth with dulling to gilt lettering there. Foxing mainly to textblock edge and pages toned. The first British edition of the author's best known work.

The First UK printing published by Gollancz, London in 1938. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine ends. Light toning and spotting to the text-block with some of the spotting encroaching onto the page edges in a few places. Some spotting and light toning to the end-papers and prelims. A neat previous owner's penned name to the front blank end-paper. The binding remains tight. The fragile WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Some edge wear with loss at the spine ends and corners. Some nicks and light creasing to the edges. Previous owner's bookplate on ffep, a little light blue bleeding to lower ffep and fep perhaps from some damp from the black cloth at some stage. Rear endpapers totally clean and unmarked. NEAR FINE/Good. 457pp. Red cloth, Navy topstain, gilt lettering blocked in black within gilt ruled border with Kent torch-bearer insignia to covers and endpapers. A very clean, sharp copy in the first state dust jacket which shows moderate wear and crinkling all over but remains clean and bright with unclipped tapered flaps.

PLEASE SEE PHOTOS. 1940 special edition with the pre-printed signatures of the Cast of the movie. It has a few dates like the floating 8 in 1938, light R denotes special run(1st) and the illustrations copyright 1939, but there are none. This might have been the last of the red cloth covers because 1940 was the year the green BCE came out and the other Re-Print Publishers had a release also. And I believe Doran got bought out(or died) that was why Garden City got used to sseparate the monies. WOW a lot this issue had going on.
And it is in such great conition too.
