Description:
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1962. [Cold-War thriller] FIRST EDITION. With accompanying SIGNED letter. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.224. Publisher's orange cloth in original dust-wrapper (without reviews) designed by Raymond Hawkey priced at 15s. A fine copy in near fine jacket with very light edge wear. TLS to a university don tucked in, with a fine example of the author's signature, on his headed writing paper. Folded twice, fine. The author's debut spy novel, a landmark in the genre, introducing the cult figure of Harry Palmer (although the character's name remained anonymous for some time). Ian Fleming (noted on the rear flap) chose Deighton's debut novel as his 'thriller of the year' for 1962. From the comprehensive James Bond collection of Ian Fleming bibliographer Jon Gilbert, with his pencilled notes and ownership to the half title. Book Collector No.287 (p.32-62) 'The Sixties'. Milward-Oliver; Len Deighton Annotated Bibliography. See also Gilbert p.548, 651.

Description:
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1963 First American Edition. New York 1963. Len Deighton's first spy novel and his first bestseller. "A high-ranking scientist has been kidnapped. A secret British intelligence agency must find out why. But as the quarry is pursued from grimy Soho to the other side of the world, what seemed a straightforward mission turns into something far more sinister. With its sardonic, cool, (in the book unnamed) working-class hero, Len Deighton's sensational debut The IPCRESS File rewrote the spy thriller and became the defining novel of 1960's London." (buecher) 'Changed the shape of the espionage thriller ... there is an infectious energy about this book which makes it a joy to read' (Daily Telegraph) Book and Dustwrapper are fine with miniscule shelf wear. Unclipped DW is now protected with a transparent Mylar sleeve. This english classic is in a wonderful priscine condition. Collector's choice.

Description:
London: Hodder, 1962. First edition, second impression. Published by Hodder & Stoughton in London, 1962. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper has some slight marks throughout and some bumping. There is marginal separation at the corners and spine tips. It has been price clipped and a 90 degree angle. The boards have a slight lean but are presentable in their bright orange buckram. The text blocks are toned throughout, though mostly free from foxing. There is one small previous owner's inscription to the front fly. Stated 'Second impression 1962 ' (issued the same month as the first) on the copyright page. Overall, this is a very good copy of an increasingly scarce title. Deighton's spy first novel in what would become a long and prolific career.
