Description:
New York: W.W. Norton & Company / Little, Brown and Company, 1996. First Editions. A compelling trio of items, comprised of Wallace's first collection of short fiction and his second novel, inscribed to Brian Simpson, long-time owner of Babbitts Books in Normal, Illinois. Wallace was a regular patron there while teaching at Illinois State University. He would often do readings and signings there, which brought in no shortage of new customers, and in an article for Condé Nast Traveler, he named it his favorite bookshop. His letter to Simpson is insightful, in which he outlines his required reading order for the Fall, 1994 semester. He asked Simpson to order the following titles for his two sections of "English 102 -- Literary Analysis 1: Prose Fiction": Black Sunday (Thomas Harris), The Big Nowhere (James Ellroy), Rock Star (Jackie Collins), Where Are the Children? (Mary Higgins Clark), Carrie (Stephen King), Lonesome Dove (Larry McMurtry), The Silence of the Lambs (Thomas Harris), and The Lion,… Read More

Description:
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1996. First edition of the author's magnum opus. Thick octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed and dated in the year of publication on the title page, "Hello! David Foster Wallace 2/96." Fine in a fine first state dust jacket with Vollmann misspelled on the back panel. Jacket design by Steve Snider. In 2004, Chad Harbach declared that, in retrospect, Infinite Jest "now looks like the central American novel of the past thirty years, a dense star for lesser work to orbit." In a 2008 retrospective by The New York Times, Infinite Jest was described as "a masterpiece that’s also a monster — nearly 1,100 pages of mind-blowing inventiveness and disarming sweetness. Its size and complexity make it forbidding and esoteric." Time Magazine included the novel in its list of the 100 best English-language novels published since 1923.

Description:
Uncorrected Advance Bound Proofs signed by David Foster Wallace; one of an unnumbered softbound edition of what the front cover in very small type labels: "Special Galleys Signed by the Author." This copy includes, laid in, a postage-paid postcard-sized "Infinite Jest Response Card" inviting readers to return it with comments on the book.

There are two small bumps to both the top and bottom edges of the book's very wide spine, and a very slight bump to the top right corner of the front cover, but otherwise a fine, unread copy.

The actual page count of the galley is 1,079 pp, though the publishing information printed on its back states 1,088 for the forthcoming hardcover.

Description:
Boston: Little, Brown & Co, 1996. First Edition. Advance copy Wallace's second novel and magnum opus, a lengthy and complex work which takes place in a North American dystopia, centering on a junior tennis academy and a substance-abuse recovery center. The advance copy was preceded by proof copies constituting a significant state of the text - a reduced version of Wallace's typed, double-spaced manuscript, bound in two volumes, and bearing his holograph corrections and additions in photocopy throughout. For both the signed advance copies as well as the trade edition, Wallace's editor, Michael Pietsch, ultimately shortened his original text by 366 pages; the novel was released to great fanfare in January, 1996, drawing significant reviews by Don DeLillo, William Vollmann, Rick Moody, Jonathan Franzen, and Jeffrey Eugenides, among others. First Printing, Advance Issue. Thick octavo (23.5cm); publisher's pictorial card wrappers; [x],[2],3-1079,[1]pp. Signed by the author on the preliminary leaf. Some… Read More

Description:
New York: Little, Brown, 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Printing (full number line), in First State dust jacket (incorrectly spelling William Vollmann as "Vollman" on back panel) of the author's magnum opus. Thick 8vo: [4],1079,[1]. Publisher's quarter-bound French blue cloth spine over periwinkle paper-covered boards, spine stamped in silver. Superb, a virtually pristine copy, square, clean, and tight. Time 100. "The plot of Infinite Jest—which revolves around, among other things, a lost, unwatchably beautiful art film and a conspiracy among wheelchair-bound Quebecois secessionists—is decidedly secondary to the painfully funny dialogue and Wallace's endlessly rich ruminations and speculations on addiction, entertainment, art, life and, of course, tennis." (Time 100) To help readers slice through the novel's dense thickets of prose, Wallace included 98 pages of "Notes & Errata." The title is from Hamlet, Act V, Scene 1, in which Hamlet holds the skull of the court jester,… Read More
