Rare first edition copy of this landmark picture book with an entirely intact dust jacket priced at $4.25 - i.e. not price clipped. Carle's legendary picture book has always been found price clipped in the first edition - including even the author's own copy (ref. Grolier 100) - until this copy was discovered. It likely escaped that fate because it was never offered for sale; for decades it lived in the personal collection of a former employee of the World Publishing Company. While contemporary publication notices in PUBLISHERS WEEKLY clearly state a list price of $4.25, first issue copies of the book are only seen with the corners of the front flap clipped, either with an additional sticker priced at $3.95, or without. Eric Carle (b. 1929) is known world-wide for this, his third book, which has been translated into more than 60 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies, garnering numerous awards along the way including the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award in 1970 and the Nakamori Reader's Prize in Japan in 1975; Carle was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 2003 by the American Library Association and was a U.S. nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010. Carle's style consists of using hand-painted tissue papers and creating a collage, which is then reproduced via offset colour lithography. This being the US first and true first edition with the code A3450 on the reverse, shown as being printed in Japan and complete number string down to 1. This copy is in very good condition. It does not have its dust wrapper. The boards are in the main clean with only the odd light mark and mild rippling to the right hand edge of the front board. The boards are gently bowed. There is a neat inscription to the top left hand corner of the leaf opposite the title page. The string binding is shaken in places but all pages are held by it. There is the very occasional small mark to the odd page. Overall a very good copy. Now presented in a loose protective cover.  One of the greatest children's books of all time, selling over 50 million copies and being translated into 60 different languages.
